Importance Of Acoustics In Public Buildings

Home Improvement,Home Repair,Interior Design
A room with soundproofing and complete noise reduction is looked upon as a room with good acoustics. Often, one tends to ignore the noise control in a room and this is very essential, especially in the public buildings. Auditorium acoustics thus carry high importance and value. There is a higher need of acoustics in classrooms, theaters, sound studios etc. Thankfully, people are getting increasingly aware about acoustic engineering and take it seriously today as compared to a couple of years ago.

How to soundproof a room? Well, the idea is to use good sound insulation material in the room, so as to prevent the noise from entering into the room as well as minimize the regenerated noise. This will reduce the strain in the room on the speaker as well as the listener. The speaker will not have to make extra effort to let his speech be heard clearly and the audience will not have to strain their ears as to listen to what the speaker is saying. Today, acoustic auditorium is looked upon as an art and is considered essential for creating an ideal environment for interaction.

People with normal hearing as well as those with hearing problems will benefit from better acoustics in the room or superior acoustics of auditorium. People with auditory processing problems and other hearing disabilities will particularly benefit. Children often carry limited vocabulary and if they miss out on some of the word from an important lecture going on in a hall, this will reflect on their performance. Given these considerations, it is evident that room acoustics are very essential in public buildings.

Often, it is seen that the sound quality in classrooms, offices, gyms and other public places that are enclosed have to deal with reverberation, that leads to a high level of the sound that gets reflected within the room. this can lead to a negative impact on the comfort levels and speech communication. It is common to come across reverberations in schools and lecture rooms that can lead to negative effects.

The sound waves follow through the direct sound path to the ears of the listener. But there is another part of sound that is reaching those ears via reflected sound paths. This reflected sound can come via different directions within close time intervals and thus produce the reverberant impact. The listener will receive the reflected sounds of previous syllables where the reverberation is high and will make the speech completely unintelligible. The public buildings where speech intelligibility rating is low, people are able to hear only about 75 percent of the words.

The only solution lies in using good acoustic and soundproofing material to improve the acoustics in the public room. One needs to add sound absorption panels, acoustic ceiling . One should use quality materials and avoids low quality acoustics panels that will not do much to improve the acoustics in a room. ask for the absorption coefficient of the acoustic material that you plan to use as this will give you the measure of the acoustic energy that will get absorbed.

Adding sound absorption panels, ceiling tiles, ventilation attenuation, or absorbing baffles will reduce the reverberation time and will improve speech intelligibility. The reverberation and noise control is based on the relative extent of sound absorption surfaces and materials that can be applied to the space. The selection of materials for reverberation control is based upon the ‘absorption coefficient’ of the material, which is a measure of the acoustic energy absorbed.

About Author : John is an expert on acoustic engineering and has written many articles on how to soundproof a room. Here he share information on controlling noise reduction and acoustical ceiling tiles.
