The two young people who lost their lives in a car crash earlySunday morning in Kirkland were friends from John Abbott Collegewho had been downtown for Grand Prix festivities. The victims of the accident on l Anse l Orme Rd. have beenidentified as Vanessa Empsall, 20, of Dollard des Ormeaux, and JeanD sir Fils Milfort, 21, of Kirkland. On Monday, police were still investigating how the vehicle drivenby Empsall went off the road and hit a tree, killing Milfort andcritically injuring her. Milfort was pronounced dead on the scene after police were calledby a jogger, who found the vehicle at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday.Empsall died later in hospital, Sunday afternoon. "I ve lost my best friend," a teary Fiona Boyd of Pointe Clairesaid on Monday of Empsall, a friend she met four years ago duringher first year at John Abbott College. "I don t think there is one bad thing I can say about her," sheadded. Boyd said she was also good friends with Milfort, a six-foot,three-inch offensive linesman with the Concordia Stingers footballteam, who played three seasons for the John Abbott Islanderscollege football team. On Saturday night, Boyd said, she and Empsall met up with Milfortdowntown after they had driven in from the West Island with anotherWest Island friend and parked near Crescent St. at about 10:30 p.m. When student protests disrupted outdoor festivities in that area,Boyd said, they walked to St. Laurent Blvd. where they went into abar and stayed until closing time at 3 a.m. At that time, Boyd said, Empsall offered to drive them all home tothe West Island. "I can t believe she is gone," said Boyd. "She is part of my everyday life. I feel incomplete without her." She said Empsall dropped her off at her home in Valois at about4:30 a.m. and then, carried on with Milfort in the car and anothermale passenger.
