A Question for Our Schools. To Security Guard or Not?

Business,Business News
Security Guard Company or the local law enforcement.

There is a dilemma that goes right along with the idea of a trained and armed security guard in our schools. In actuality there are several:

With Sandy Hook as our basis of just how much horror one person with enough guns can do to a school, there is obviously a compelling reason for security guards. But at what cost?

There’s the errant bullet, fired from a security guard trying to stop a shooter. A small price to pay in consideration to the ultimate objective of the killer, but one that carries a step decision-making burden for those responsible for charting the course of the school and the safety of the students.

There’s also the quite natural truth that people make mistakes…even security guards. Case in point? Chatfield School in Lapeer, Michigan. They hired a security in hopes of preventing a repeat of what happened at Sandy Hook and what happens? The security guard ends up leaving his gun in the bathroom. I don’t know about you…but am I willing to risk my 8 year old getting her hands on that gun? Not on your life.

And, then there’s Columbine which, if anything, proves that someone set on destruction will find a way to achieve their goal, regardless of security guards, guns and an other preventive measures taken to avoid such tragic results.

In the end, employing security guards and security companies to keep our schools safe is definitely preferable to doing nothing at all. As time goes by, the use of security guards in our schools will prove itself out…either effective, as hoped, or just another measure that hasn’t quite panned out.">Sandy Hook. Columbine. Jonesboro. Nickel Mines. Springfield. The list of infamous school shootings is a long one…far longer than it should be in any sane person’s mind.

Lost among the debate on outlawing types of guns, ammo clips and the feuding between the government and gun activists is the age old debate of whether employing security guards, either through a private security guard company or through the local police makes sense. In wake of all this heartbreaking death to children and those who care for them, the natural reaction would be “yes”..having security guards at our schools is not just wise…it’s a necessity.

The history books, both past and present are dotted with examples that support a view that having a security guard, or security team, is a wise idea. But there can also be a case made for the ineffectiveness of the idea.

Let’s start with one of the more infamous cases in American history…Columbine. Many people don’t realize that there was not one, but two security guards on duty at the school during the time of the shooting. And these weren’t private security guards…they were deputies of the local police department. Yet, they couldn’t stop the unwarranted killing of 15 kids and the wounding of countless others. They gunmen, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, died at their own hands…not from the gun of an armed security guard or a law enforcement officer.

But, step outside the educational arena for a moment and you get a quite opposite picture. The 2007 incident at the New Life Church in Colorado Spring, Colorado is a shining example of how life can be saved by employing security guards. While four innocent people were shot in the parking lot, two of who died, countless others inside the sanctuary, where a mass of bodies together equals disaster when confronted by a crazed man with a gun, were saved thanks to quick action of an armed and prepared security staff.

Sandy Hook, perhaps the most heartbreaking of all the school tragedies, will be remembered. Not only for fostering the heated gun debate that is currently going on throughout the country, but also the debate surrounding the need for security guards, whether from a Security Guard Company or the local law enforcement.
