Organization is key for optimizing the use of your storage space. Most people don’t plan how they’re going to store their things in a storage space, opting instead to just schlep everything in and leave it where it lies. Before you get a storage space, plan for its use. In general, a space slightly larger than your goods is ideal – you want to make sure there is room to maneuver or walk around. Plan to arrange your goods in order of how accessible you want them to be – holiday decorations at the back, for example, and items you’re selling online nearer the front. All items in a storage space should be in their proper containers. Oddly-shaped items are easy to identify but plain old boxes may get confused during the shuffle of moving. Label them legibly on the side of the box that faces out as well as the top. Knowing what’s in which box will help minimize the number of times you have to open a box and riffle through it, which in turn will help keep things tidy in your storage space. Instead of choosing a few large boxes for your goods, consider using smaller boxes that can be designated more specifically. The legend “ladles/spatulas/baking” is more informative than the similar “kitchen.” Once a box has been opened and the necessary contents removed, a smaller box is also easier to tape shut. Even an organized storage locker is of no use if you can’t get it open. Remembering the location of the storage locker key, or lock combination, is incredibly important as well. Keep your storage invoices in the same place, whether on paper or online, and remember the name and location of your storage facility. It seems obvious, but sometimes months go by between trips and it’s easy to misplace a key or a passcode during that time. Save yourself the trouble an embarrassment of cutting a lock or berating the manager at an unknown personal storage unit. For most people, organization seems like a never-ending chore: packing boxes and bags, labeling things, untangling fairy lights, and planning what you’ll need in the future. In the case of storage space, if you start organizing your storage space from the beginning, including both its contents and its keys, it doesn’t have to take long. And the reward for organization is a tidy, useful storage space you always have access to. Worth it!
