How to Teach English in Turkey

Education,Career,Self Improvement
If the idea of teaching English to people in foreign countries is of interest to you, one great choice of location would be Turkey. Turkey it is a very interesting country with a rich culture; you only have to look at the skyline of any of Turkey's big cities, and you will see a rich mix of both ancient and ultramodern cultures. There are also beautiful landscapes, including volcanic lakes, deserts, and underground cities and valleys. Also, people in Turkey tend to be warm and generous, with strong traditions of family values and hospitality. However, before you prepare for a trip to Turkey, you need to take several factors into consideration.

How difficult would it be to get a job as an English teacher in Turkey?

Opportunities for English teaching positions in Turkey are plentiful. Because the Turkish government is determined to join the European Union as soon as possible, it is important to them that their people be able to speak English well. Thus, there is a very high demand for good TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teachers. To find these opportunities you can search for English jobs in Turkey on sites such as TeacherHit. Schools and businesses all over Turkey are encouraging their pupils and workers to improve upon their English language skills. In fact, in public schools alone, there is a major need for English teachers; there are 30,000 positions available for English teachers just in these schools.

Are there any particular cities that would be best in terms of looking for teaching positions?

The three cities where you will have the most luck in finding English teaching jobs are Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. The largest offering of English teaching jobs is in Istanbul. This city is the business and economic capital of Turkey, and as such, there is a huge requirement for English speaking citizens, and thus good English teachers. The second best place to find jobs is Turkey's capital city, Ankara. Izmir has no shortage of jobs either, being Turkey's second-largest port and a major target for tourists. Izmir also contains many private language schools that are in need of English teachers.

What qualifications are necessary for a position as an English teacher in Turkey?

In order to be well-qualified to teach English in Turkey, you will need a minimum of a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification. Most schools in Turkey will require that you have done about 120 hours of TEFL courses at a very minimum. Be sure that you include your TEFL certification on your resume when you are applying for teaching jobs. You should also include any teaching experience that you have, as this is relevant and will be an advantage for you with any employer. In addition to TEFL certification, a high school diploma is required by all employers, and a bachelor's degree is preferred.

Do I need to know the Turkish language in order to be considered for one of these teaching positions?

This is not a requirement at all. In fact, employers of English teachers prefer that you only speak English with your students. The approved approaches to teaching English, which you will be taught during your training, only require a very fluent knowledge of the English language; it is not necessary to be able to communicate with your students in Turkish. However, it would definitely be to your benefit to learn some Turkish in order to be able to communicate well with everybody that you meet during your stay in the country. Although most Turkish citizens speak English in these modern times, some villagers still do not, and it would be good to be able to communicate with and possibly even teach some of them as well.

What can I expect in terms of salary as an English teacher in Turkey?

Your salary is an English teacher in Turkey can vary, depending on your qualification level and your experience. Salaries are very reasonable, especially when you consider the average cost of living in Turkey. Typically, teachers can expect to earn anywhere between 1300 and 2200 lira, which is €560-€940, per month after tax. Since the cost of living in Turkey is very low, you should be able to save 800-1800 lira, or €345-€770, per month. Of course, this depends on how much you spend on a monthly basis.
