Sailing Tips For Beginners

Travel & Tourism
Although boating provides a great outdoor experience, there are some risks involved in setting sail. Being stranded out in the open sea with a big storm heading your way is among greatest dangers of sailing, thus you should never come unprepared. You should also make sure that you know what to do in the occurrence of huge waves, massive winds and leaking boats as well.

And like the saying goes, "accidents typically happen when you least expect it". Most accidents occur when you're not conscious that something wrong might happen and when you are unaware and calm. The most effective safety measure is to observe safety attitudes that may lead you out of harms way.

Here are a couple of sailing safety tips that you must definitely know about.

1. First of all, you must keep in mind and understand the "Road Rules" or right of way polices and responsibilities between different vessels.

2. Be sure that your boat is equipped with all the safety equipments required.

3. Before leaving, you must use a safety list in checking the boat gears and equipments and orient the crews and guests about safety measures on board. Being with guests on your boat may include some particular risks especially if they aren't familiar with the boat and they don't have the knowledge on what to do in case an emergency occurs.

4. Have a float plan to let the rescuers be alarmed in case of emergencies.

5. You must require yourself and your crew to wear a Personal Floating Device (PFD) all the time since one of the most common boating accidents is falling off a boat.

6. To ensure staying on the boat in any circumstances, wearing a safety harness is advised.

7. When sailing offshore or any areas at night, you must install an AIS system to your boat to avoid impact with other ships.

8. When boating in cold areas, it is important to have particular safety measures because you may only have minutes to react because hypothermia quickly affects your body capabilities.

9. Make sure that you know how to de-power or lower sails in times of emergencies.

10. Good sailors must be aware of the weather and know how to make use of sail adjustments for tough winds.

11. Safety also involves good skills in navigation in order to avoid dangerous areas. An effective way to know where exactly you are and where you're heading to all the time is by using a chart plotter.

12. Always be conscious of offshore winds.

13. Make sure that you tell someone where you're going and when you will return.

14. Always wear proper protective clothing and sunscreen to protect you from harmful elements.

15. Drink and pack plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

16. Always check local regulations and policies and restricted areas.

17. Always be aware and cautious of the boom. Some of the common injuries in sailing occur when one is not aware of the movement or swinging of the boom.

18. Make sure that you are familiar with the basic sailing terms. Be certain to know the difference between starboard and port and other important terms and concepts in sailing.
