How to Preform CPR I am a firm believer in everyone having this skill. I believe this skill should be taught at schools everywhere and should be common knowledge from young to old. Everyone can learn how to save a life and should know the basic First Aid skills essential in a life threatening situation. First, what is the purpose of CPR? What is it that it accomplishes? Will it always have a positive outcome? Where can I become certified or become an instructor? All this will be answered in this article. www.ttcsafety.com First what is the purpose of CPR? The main point to this skill is not only to compress the heart. The more accurate answer is to circulate blood. Where? To the brain. The body can be compared to an empty shell if our brain is not functional. One cannot live a normal life, have a job or enjoy your family if you’re alive only because your body is still pumping blood to its vital organs. However the brain is what in my opinion, gives us the quality of life that we want. Without this we are simply not living. When compressing on the chest during CPR we push down two inches for a regular size adult. This is done at a rate of 100 times a minute. Doing this we are accomplishing what our heart does on a normal basis. It acts like a pump that produces pressure in our circulatory system. When all is working as needed. The brain receives oxygenated blood essential for proper function. When this occurs, our brain can work at full capacity and will coordinate our body as it is intended to do. When this process is not functioning, that is when CPR is most important. Studies have shown that 10% of your survival rate is diminished with every passing minute CPR is withheld. Most EMS departments in an average sizes city, will take 5-8 minutes to respond to a residence. Which means that if you do not initiate CPR until EMS arrives on scene 5-8 minutes later. You have just lost 50% - 80% chance for that person. So now we know that the purpose of CPR is to circulate oxygenated blood to the brain. Also, we talked about what doing this accomplishes. It accomplishes a better outcome for defibrillation which in turn gives a better survival rate. So now, will it always have a positive outcome? No. The fact is many variables exist for why a person is going through cardiac arrest. It could be because of a congenital heart issue, occluded arteries from years of unhealthy eating or from a respiratory issue. Either way proper CPR can increase dramatically you chances of surviving a scenario of that sort. Proper training should be given to all that are around a family member that has cardiac issues. The issue of a DNR should also be something that is talked about before these issues arise. Where can you become certified or become an instructor? Most Community Colleges may offer a CPR class every so often. Often a Nurse that works for the hospital is usually the one who certifies or re-certifies people on the job. EMS and Fire Stations often have trainers in house that take care of this. Day Care Centers or Elderly Care Facilities often prefer to outsource this responsibility and this is where you come in. If you’re interested in instructing classes in your community this would be an excellent place to start. Many industries like oil and gas, wind energy and law enforcement all use third party training centers to host Medic First Aid CPR/AED Certification classes for their employees.
