Over the last week, we covered multiple bear cubs that were rescuedby local people. and handed over to the Department of Game andInland Fisheries. Unfortunately, two of the cubs were put down byofficials, who after multiple questions from WSLS finally said itwas because the animals weren't in a good enough shape torehabilitate. Their actions created a huge reaction from our viewers. Here aresome of the comments from our WSLS Facebook page. Cheryl Blanks posted, "I hope you will continue to cover theOUTRAGE over the Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries biologist'sdecision to euthanize the baby bear cub in Giles County. She needsto be fired! The Dept took the easy way out, just kill it! Pleasestay on this!" Rucker Keister added, "Sounds like typical governmentgobledegook. And typical government employees that are moreconcerned with their benefits than doing their job. Good for youWSLS10! Keep after them. They need to answer the questions abouthow they treat animals." Doris Ann Neice wrote, "Ridiculous!!!!! So do we euthanizehumans when they are too dehydrated, too sick? But if I find oneand keep it guess what, I'm going to get fined or go to jail!!! Thepoor things should have been given a chance. JUST SAYING!!!" And, finally Brenda added, "Really?! DGIF apparently spentmore time and coming up with this "explanation" than they spenttrying to save these cubs. If this were the case, why didn't theysay so in the first place? They are lying - they know it and WEknow it! SHAME on these people - first for killing these babies andthen for trying to cover it up with lies!!" Several weeks ago, a new member of our staff made debut doing theweather which prompted this email from Carol Bowling. She wrote, "Jay--Last night on the 10 o'clock & 11 o'clocknews, there was a new meteorologist . It seems it would have beencourteous to introduce her. No one mentioned her name. No one saidif she was a temp or a new member of the Storm Team. Something iswrong here. Where have manners gone?" WSLS responds: Carol, thanks for the email. Christina Montouri is anew member of our staff and you'll be seeing her as a part of ourmorning show and on our Storm Team. Christina, who is ameteorologist, grew up in Vinton and recently moved back to thearea. and, we're thrilled to have her as a part of our WSLS family. She filled in at the last minute the night you saw her, as JeffHaniewich, our chief meteorologist, was at the hospital with hiswife as she delivered their new baby girl. The lack of introductionwas less poor manners and more a simple oversight in the rush ofevents.
