"We are introducing outcomes of the first randomized managed involvement test indicating that improved water consumption is an effective weight-loss strategy," described Brenda Davy, Ph.D., senior author of the research, to journalists. "In this recent research, we found that over the course of 12 weeks, people who drink water before meals, three times per day, lose about five pounds more than people who did not increase their water intake."
The viewpoint behind the "water cure" indicates that by taking more water, there is less room in the stomach for meals. So essentially, the zero-calorie drink replaces meals, which outcomes in less calories and less additional weight. However, all members in the research ate low-calorie meals as part of the research -- and all lost some weight. But those who drank water before their meals lost more than those who did not.
