His company discovered 10 occupations with the biggest percentage increases in requiring a graduate degree. In 2007, 11% of employers required higher qualifications for the position of a dental laboratory technician. In 2012, job seekers came across 33% of job advertisements that mandated a Bachelor’s degree for the same occupational title! Job candidates are now expected to be highly qualified if they want to become a photographer, a purchasing agent for farm products, or an electronic engineering technician. It is not clear why jobs which historically required fewer technical skills are mandating a college-level education. Some believe employers want to narrow down the pool of potential applicants. Others believe, these jobs have become more technically sophisticated in the last five years. In addition to being discriminated by future employers, high school graduates have discovered difference between the median wage for college graduates and those with high school education. In the late 1970s, the median wage for college graduates was 40% higher than for people with high school diploma. Today, the wage premium is about 80%!
