UFO’s Strangers In The Night (SITN) is generally acknowledged as one of the all time live albums in the heavy rock genre. The British band had hit the big time and cracked America on the back of their preceding two albums – Lights Out and Obsession – so a live album was the next logical step. SITN most certainly does not disappoint in any way and still stands up to scrutiny today. Indeed, some 35 years since SITN was first released many of the songs still form the backbone of UFO’s live set. Now you can enjoy the aural experience as it was back in 1979 thanks to the classic album being available in the original vinyl format. Those of us old enough to have been around back then will have fond memories of vinyl so this is a chance to replace that (possibly) lost treasure. Although with the resurgence in popularity of the vinyl record, you now have the opportunity to see what it’s all about as well as own a true classic. Strangers In The Night was also the last recording featuring the classic line-up of Phil Mogg, Michael Schenker, Pete Way, Paul Raymond and Andy Parker. The enigmatic guitar genius that is Michael Schenker was on storming form here though would leave the band mid-tour. This line-up would reform in the late 1990s for the Walk On Water album and Shcenker came and went a few more times though that’s a whole other story. Playing in front of big crowds in Chicago and Kentucky, the band responds to the action and really rip it up. It’s a showcase for Schenker’s huge talent though he would be later somewhat critical of the cuts chosen. The atmosphere and electricity shines through with many of UFO’s classics and crows-pleasures featuring over the double-live album. Natural Thing is an excellent opener. Everyone there knows the words to Only You Can Rock Me and (hit single) Doctor Doctor. The atmospheric Love to Love with the big close-out solo hits the spot then side three becomes Schenker’s territory with barnstorming work on Lights Out and the extended Rock Bottom. The pace doesn’t relent all the way through to the closing Shoot Shoot. It’s awesome stuff from start to finish as UFO show how it should be done. SITN is a timeless album capturing a heavy rock band at their commercial peak and pomp. It raced to a top 50 spot in the USA album charts and top ten in the UK. It’s enduring popularity and demand has brought about a re-issue on 180 gram vinyl with a slightly revised running order and the addition of some tracks not on the original release. Whether you are a UFO fan, or just in to your heavy/classic rock then here’s a chance to own a double-live album which is a defining moment in the genre and also acted as a strong influence on many other bands down the years. Indeed, Slash himself is on, er, record as saying Strangers In The Night is his favourite live album. Own a copy and it will probably become yours too especially now being able to own the vinyl version. A classic live album in the classic format.
