So, you have decided to take the plunge and embark on the exciting journey of discovery that is affiliate marketing… and make yourself tons of money to boot. But where do you start? Faced with a vast sea of offers, products and promotions, along with an array of unfamiliar terms like PPC, CPA, CPC, PLR, JV, adsence, adwords, hoplink, hyperlink, keyword research, SEO, link farm, link juice and many others, where do you even begin to unveil the mystery of Affiliate Marketing? Key Principles and Guidelines Well, your first task is to establish some key principles that will serve to guide you through the early stages of your affiliate marketing journey. In speaking of these guidelines, I am reminded of the analogy of a traveller of ancient times, journeying along a busy and treacherous road to the sanctuary of a faraway City, the giant pillars of which are visible from a distance. The goal of the traveller is to reach the City, however, there are many paths leading from the main road to the city, some of which are occupied by pirates and charlatans variously attempting to divert the traveller from his course with shiny objects and promises of great riches. For the traveller to overcome these distractions, he must keep his attention focussed on the objects of his journey - the giant pillars of the City in the horizon. Pillar No 1 The first guideline you must follow on your affiliate marketing journey is to choose a large market. The reason for the choice of a large market is that by definition a large market provides a large number of potential buyers to whom you can promote your offer and make sales in large numbers. It is also much easier to find profitable products to promote within a large market. Consider the weight loss market as an example. There are millions of people all over the world trying to lose weight, making this market huge. Because this market is so large, you do not need to dominate it to make money. Just a small slice of it will do. Contrast this with something like the model aircraft market, which is much smaller and more specialised, making it harder to find profitable products. This market also has a much smaller crowd to sell to. That is not to say you cannot make money from a niche market such as the model aircraft market, only it is not recommended for a beginner. Pillar No 2 The second guideline to follow on your affiliate marketing journey is to target proven online buyers. As incredible as it may sound, there are large groups of people who buy very little on line. Examples include certain demographic groups, like Senior Citizens, who have less of an inclination to buy on line, and folks from certain countries where the politics on the country may be restrictive to the freedom of its citizens. Pillar No 3 The third guideline follows from the second in that you have to be able to put your offer in front of your target market. In other words, you should be able to get your message to your chosen group of potential buyers either through advertising or some other means. If advertising is to be used, then it should be affordable. Returning to our analogy of the ancient traveller, fuelled by your determination to succeed, focusing on the above three pillars will enable you to make a solid start on your journey to the promised land of Affiliate Marketing.
