The old line about Spain may mention the plains, but when you visit places like Lloret de Mar, Barcelona and other Spanish destinations, you’ll come across plenty of charming gardens as well. We’ve unearthed three we particularly liked we think you’ll like as well - so make sure you check these out. One is in Lloret de Mar; Barcelona is home to the other two. Santa Clotilde Gardens Let’s begin in Lloret de Mar; Barcelona gardens may be larger and more famous but this smaller coastal resort is becoming hot property. The word ‘unmissable’ really is warranted when it is used to describe Santa Clotilde Gardens. They can be found in a picturesque cliff top position, looking out over the sea. There are wonderful views in the park itself too, with many winding paths lined with unusual and striking sculptures, carefully positioned on either side. Take your time to explore the gardens and perhaps stop for a picnic lunch beneath one of the many shady trees. Barcelona Botanical Gardens When you leave Lloret de Mar, Barcelona beckons in the shape of the city's lovely Botanical Gardens. It is hard to believe today, but these gardens used to be rather less attractive than they are, as they were built on top of a landfill site! You will find various regions represented in the gardens, including the Mediterranean, California, South Africa and Australia. One of the most interesting facts about the gardens is their ability to give a home to such a wide variety of plants. This is because they are built on sloping ground, with a significant difference in temperature between the top and the bottom areas. It means you’ll get plenty of exercise wandering up and down the paths, but it is well worth it. Park Guell We may be saving the best for last here, as these gardens are one of the most famous attractions of the city. They were created by the famous artist Antoni Gaudi and took some four or five years to bring to fruition. Gaudi was somewhat flamboyant as a designer, and his style can be seen all around the park – and indeed the city (don't miss the infamous Sagrada Familia). Note in particular the famous salamander at the entrance to the park – a true vision in mosaics everyone stops to see. More mosaic work can be seen on one of the terraces as well. Lush parks and gardens are an integral part of life in Spain. They provide somewhere to relax and take some time out to enjoy the scenery and simply to "be".
