There are several contradictory theories regarding the origin and structural significance of ‘Star of David’ which is also known as ‘Shield of David’ or ‘Magen David’ in Hebrew. ‘David’ here is believed to be King David who was the ruler of ancient Israel. He belonged to the Judah tribe and was famous as a skilled warrior and for biblical episode of ‘David and Goliath’. According to many scholars on Jewish culture and symbolism, the star sign was influenced by king’s shield. It was, most probably, designed after the shape of the shield or an emblem on the same. However, this interpretation is not supported by historical evidences as no earlier Jewish literature or artwork has any mention of this symbol. In fact, in earlier period of Jewish origination, candelabra or menorah was more prevalent a symbol for the community. Apart from the origin of this Jewish symbol, there are a lot of conflicting views pertaining to the emblem. Over centuries, many people including the scholars as well as the students of theology have reflected upon the true meaning of Star of David. In accordance with the Kabbalah (Jewish Mysticism) scholars, the star is a symbolic representation of god’s rule in every direction such as north, east, west, south, up and down. The upward and downward triangles, according to many, represent heaven and earth. The opposite direction of the two equilateral triangles is believed to carry a greater symbolic significance. It represents duality in every aspect of nature and life like fire and water, good and evil, spiritual and materials aspects and duality in the mind of human being. The entwined triangles, according to some, represent the bond between god and Jewish people. Six stars have a total of twelve sides and represent 12 different tribes of Israel unified under King David. It was only 1867 when the symbol was first adopted as an emblem for the Zionist movement. There are some documented proofs regarding the usage of this symbol in Jewish artwork, gravestones, synagogues and religious artifacts. However, there is no existence of literary recordings before 12th century. Interestingly, the Star of David has both happy and sad implications. The symbol was used to humiliate the Jewish community during the Holocaust. However, it has now become a source of pride for the Jews and been accepted as the symbol of Judaism.
