What is an Affiliate? The term affiliate is used to refer to ordinary folk like you and I when we are engaged in an online activity called Affiliate Marketing. Affiliate Marketing is an internet based system in which a business rewards a person or group of people for bringing customers to the business. The affiliate is paid a commission, sometimes called a referral fee, by the business (or merchant,) for the efforts of referring customers to that business. The commission is usually paid in cash and is paid either when the customer buys something from the business or, in some cases, when a potential customer registers their interest by leaving behind contact details that can later be followed up by the business in question. Another common form of Affiliate Marketing is Adsense, in which an affiliate places relevant advertisements on his or her web site and every time a visitor clicks on one of the adverts, the affiliate is paid a commission, even if the visitor does not purchase anything from the merchant's website. It goes without saying, therefore, that to become an affiliate you need to maintain a web site that contains links for directing visitors to the offer page or online store of the merchant. When a visitor to your site clicks on one of the links and eventually purchases something from the merchant's website, you are paid a referral fee because it is through your work that the merchant realised that sale. The merchant will either pay you when the visitor buys something or when he or she signs up to something on the merchant's site, depending on the type of offer. A special affiliate link is assigned to your web page in order that the merchant can distinguish the visitor as having come from your web site. Other affiliates will naturally have affiliate links unique to them. Five Prime Reasons to Become an Affiliate There are many reasons why one should consider getting involved in Affiliate Marketing. However, I consider the following five reasons to be the most compelling, not necessarily in order of importance. 1. No qualifications required - anyone can become an affiliate All you need to become an affiliate is to be of average intelligence and have a computer and access to the internet. Regardless of race, colour, sex or creed, anyone can get involved in affiliate marketing. With the exception of perhaps one or two countries, it matters not in which part of the world you live. There are literally thousands of affiliates - male and female, young and old - all over the world on the internet today. 2. Little or no risk It costs very little to get started as an affiliate. You can get started earning commissions without so much as spending a cent. However, if you are serious about making money online as an affiliate then you will need a small outlay to invest in a domain name and some hosting for your website. Once you get into it, you may decide to spend money hiring services to do some of the work to save you time. 3. No need to create your own product. In many respects, running an affiliate marketing business is no different to running a conventional business. However, the one aspect that sets affiliate marketing apart and makes it all the more attractive is the fact there is no need to find, invent or even create your own product. With Affiliate Marketing all this is done for you. In fact the associated costs of design, production and marketing a product are usually the biggest barriers to people starting their own conventional business. 4. The sky's the limit. Affiliate marketing is not a get rich quick scheme and it requires hard work and commitment to succeed. However, regardless of your current circumstances, if you are prepared to put the work in, then the sky is the limit. You get out of it as much as you put in. 5. There is lots of choice. As an affiliate, you are not limited to promoting just one product. There are thousands of affiliate programs available to join. In fact the choice is so large as to present a problem for the would-be affiliate in choosing only one or two programs to begin with, then later venturing out when one has gained some success and experience.
