This annual tradition has continued annually and this year, Sixindividuals, each of whom are pillars of the Jewish community, werehonored by members of congress at a celebration in the CapitolBuilding held on May 16th for their contributions to Americansociety. With their collective participation in human rights,health services, business, technology, government, justice system,and law enforcement they are the embodiment of American ideals. The special guests recognized at this year s annual celebrationwere Rabbi Simcha Scholar, Rabbi Abe Friedman, Alyza Lewin, RabbiElie Abadie, Phil Friedman and Ari Scharf. Rabbi Simcha Scholar isthe executive vice president of the world renowned Chai Lifeline,which provides support services to thousands of seriously illchildren and their families. Rabbi Abe Friedman is a Chasidiccommunity leader from the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, who,for over fifteen years, has been a chaplain/community liaison tonumerous law enforcement agencies in New York and New Jerseyincluding the New York Police Department, the New Jersey StatePolice Department, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority andseveral sheriff s departments, as well as other state and federalagencies. Coming from a long line of distinguished rabbis, RabbiElie Abadie is a practicing physician, the founding rabbi of theEdmond J. Safra Synagogue and director of the Jacob E. SafraInstitute of Sephardic Studies at Yeshiva University. Alyza Lewin,Esq, a lawyer who specializes in litigation and governmentrelations, has spent years contributing to the American justicesystem. Working with her father, famed lawyer Nathan Lewin, Esq,Ms. Lewin has helped numerous individuals who have been denied asecurity clearance and government employees who are the subject ofinquiries relating to their official duties. Originally from theSoviet Union, Phil Friedman understands the significance of freedomof religion, having been forced to learn Hebrew for his Bar Mitzvahin secret and in an effort to support Jewish education, hisAlexander Friedman Scholarship fund awards scholarships to fiveYeshiva University students annually. Friedman is the founder ofComputer Generated Solutions, a multinational company providingsoftware, consulting, systems integration, training and help desksupport. Ari Scharf is the director of Project Mesorah which iscommitted to educating Jewish youth about their heritage. Mr.Scharf is also the President of of Franklin Exhibits which is nowdeveloping the Air Force One Museum which will tour the UnitedStates and educate young and old about the importance of democracy. It is important that we acknowledged Jewish community leaders ina venue as high profile as the U.S. Capitol, giving ourrepresentatives in congress the opportunity to recognize themduring May, Jewish American Heritage Month, said EzraFriedlander, CEO of The Friedlander Group, the coordinator of theevent. The keynote address was delivered by Senator Marco Rubio ofFlorida, who is being touted as a possible running mate forRepublican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Senator Rubio wasintroduced by Stanley Tate an icon of the South Florida Community.Acknowledging the contributions of the honorees were House HomelandSecurity Chairman Peter T. King of New York and InternationalRelations Committee Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Congressmen Bob Turnerand Louie Gohmert. Congressman John Barrasso was introduced bySidney Greenberger Chairman of the Raoul Wallenberg CentennialCelebration Commission. Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, executive vicepresident of the New York Board of Rabbis acted as Master ofCeremonies. Remarks were also heard from Rabbi Levi Shemtov – ExecutiveVice President of American Friends of Lubavitch. Special messageswere delivered by Nathan Lewin Esq who was introduced by Rabbi AbbaCohen of Agudath Israel. The tribute ceremony was attended by over 100 leaders of the Jewishcommunities from New York, Pennsylvania, Washington Dc and Florida. I would like to extend my personal congratulations to all thehonorees, who continue to forge links in the ongoing chain ofJewish American heritage, said Congressman Peter King, who spokein recognition of Rabbi Abe Friedman achievements.
