Managing Alzheimer's before and after treatment in Germany

Alzheimer’s is an incurable disease. It is degenerative in nature and ends up eventually in death. Today it is basically called a very advanced form of dementia, whose diagnosis is done when it has reached the point of no return. Generally it is found to be mostly in people aged above 65, if it is found to be in people below that age group then the term Alzheimer’s is properly applied.

Some symptoms of this disease would be forgetting things, not the unusual things but in fact the usual. For example the mind would retain memory of how to drive a car but mundane actions like where the car was parked are forgotten by the patient.

The signs after their manifestation take on a more drastic turn where the patient often forgets his/her name, relation to any particular relative, when they were married etc. There bouts of memory that come and go, some episodes that make them completely normal but wear off soon enough.

Medically the cause of this disease has not been clearly found, there are some theories and experimental possible conclusions but nothing concrete has been achieved or found. There is though one mutual agreement that it has to do something with the proteins in the brain of individual deteriorating and taking down other nervous organelles with it. It is the dissolution of tha protein into another that causes memory loss of the permanent kind. If the scientist can somehow find a way to halt this dissolution permanently then maybe the disease can be cured. This has been performed on mice in Germany and the experiments have been successful but it has fallen short on humans up till with some fatal and damaging side effects. Some common treatments to halt the effect of Alzheimers, particularly in Germany are:

Oestrogen treatment: Oestrogen is known to have a very beneficial effect on the brain of those its administered to. It is known to stop or halt the brain from deteriorating. With these effects it can be used to slow down if not halt the proteins in brains from dissolution. The oestrogen therapy may help the postmenopausal women by slowing down or in some cases preventing Alzheimer’s.

Anti-inflammatory agents: They act more as preventive agents.

Vitamin E, Folate and Vitamin B12: Deficiency of these vitamins increases the risk of Alzheimers and increases the side disorders.

Ginkgo biloba: Ginkgo biloba is said to have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-platelet properties. It is licensed for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease in Germany and is commonly used complementary medicines for cognitive problems.

*These are therapeutic treatments that have been suggested but there has not been a concrete study to prove that they are indeed helpful.

Breaking the status quo:

In Germany there has been ongoing stem cell research to cure Alzheimer’s. This does not necessarily mean that they have been successful but there has been some evidence that they eventually will cause a break-through in the research.
