It pays to be careful when donating to a charity, and when choosing a charity that you are unfamiliar with, you need to ask questions, and even if the answers seem legitimate, still check the charity out with a registered authority as there are many scammers, especially online. Even if the charity is well known and reputable, the person that contacts you should be checked out, as they should be easily authorized if they are representing a charitable organization. Should you be approached on the street or door to door, ask for identification as well as a copy of the pledge form. A pledge form should have the full name of the organization, the business address and contact details, a legitimate registration number and the charities logo.
When approached by telephone, door to door or on the street, one should call the charity concerned to verify the contact details, and one can also check the telephone directory to cross check the contact details. In order to find out if a charity is legally registered, check the NFP Commission and Australian Charities websites, which will give a listing of registered Australian charities. When making charity donation and charitable donations, be careful of giving out your credit card details or banking details. If the charity is registered and reputable, they will advise you on other ways to donate. If you have been directed to a social media site or website, check the validity before donating.
You can also check out the charity scams webpage, to get all the latest information on charity scams. Donations are only taxable if the charity is endorsed by the ATO as a DGR organization. A donation has to be 2 or more dollars before you can claim the amount on your tax return for the same year the donation was made. Before donating check with the ATO if the organization is a DGR. If you have encountered any problems with a charity or have found the charity to be a scam, you can report them to the relevant territory or state regulator. You can also lodge a complaint with the Not for Profits Commission and Australian Charities.
Should a charity webpage look dodgy, you can contact the ACNC to raise a concern. Australian charities that are abroad and receive funds from Aus AID, have to be members of the ACFID, and also have to abide to the ACFID Code of Conduct and regulations. Visit the ACFID Code of Conduct webpage for further information on the code, and find out how to register a complaint, as well as check out the charities signatories. Donating to a charity is a wonderful gesture.
