The urban service area of Fort McMurray is situated within the Municpality of Wood Buffalo, Alberta in the heart of Canada's oil sands. Although technically not a city, it is the largest populated area in the region and it provides amenities, accommodation and cultural activities for the many oil workers who reside in the surrounding areas. Many Fort McMurray apartments, hotels, bars, restaurants and other amenities were creates solely for the purpose of accommodating the thousands of oil workers who relocate to the region every year in search of highly paid oil jobs. Although more often than not the shifts patterns and the remote areas in which much of the work is carried out can cause restrictions as to when workers are able to visit the urban service area for social and recreational reasons, many do find the time to come and take advantage of the many activities and events on offer. That said, an increasing number of workers are also finding more time to visit the outlying communities that are dotted around the Municipality of Wood Buffalo, where small hamlets and villages host a variety of interesting and often unique sights and activities, adding to the already rich heritage and culture of the Alberta region. Anzac - Perhaps the most popular of these backwater communities is Anzac. The place takes its name from the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps who were stationed in the area during WW1, and it lays between beautiful boreal forest and miles of unspoiled, snow-covered wilderness. Many people visit Anzac in order to take snowmobile adventures through the meticulously well-kept snow trails that are managed by the Sno Drifer's Snowmobile Club. It is also a popular destination for ice fishers who visit during winter time in order to fish on the frozen Willow and Engstrom Lakes. Fort McKay - Just a short drive from most Fort McMurray apartments is Fort McKay. This is a tiny hamlet that sits amongst the oil sand harvesting sites, and is proud of its cultural heritage. Although many people come here to work, it is also a popular destination for tourists who want to see the oil sands themselves and learn about the place where the oil production in the area all began. It is also near to a native reserve, where members of the First Nation and Metis tribes still reside and form part of the Athabasca Tribal Council. Conklin - Further afield, but well worth the scenic 155km drive through stunning landscape, is the hamlet community of Conklin near Christina Lake. Far removed from the modern apartments in Fort McMurray, Christina Lake offers a spacious lodge and waterside cabins where guests can stay. Again, snowmobiling, ice fishing and cross country skiing are just some of the activities that are on offer in this winter wonderland. There are many other such places scattered around the area surrounding Fort McMurray. Although the city itself does have a lot to offer, it does pay to get off the beaten track once in a while and go exploring the great region.
