What is DOF? The simplest definition of DOF is that the clear part in a photo. Professionally, it means the distance from front DOF to back DOF. To achieve light DOF, you need to depend on the factors, like aperture, focus length, size of sensor and distance from the camera, subject to background. Aperture What is aperture? You can find the mark of aperture scale on the camera, like f3.5-5.6. The most important function of lens is to collect and pass the light to sensor, which is showed on the aperture. Use “f” to express aperture value. The smaller f is, the bigger the aperture is (the bigger the lens opens). DOF is affected by the aperture. The bigger the aperture is, the lighter DOF is and vice versa. you can only adjust you photo on Photo Editor afterwards if used less suitable aperture. Focus length The next factor is focus length. If you have zoom lens or two fixed focus lens with different focus lengths, you can test yourself. The most basic conclusion is that the longer the focus length is, the lighter DOF will be and vice versa. If you use 50mm lens and f2.8 aperture to shoot, and change to 200mm lens and f/2.8 aperture, the two DOF is obviously different. Size of sensor Think about the card machine. Do you notice that you do not shoot light DOF with card machine? That’s because the sensor of card machine is too small. However, the camera with big sensor is easy to shoot light DOF, like full frame or APS-C frame camera. Distance from you to the subject The closer the distance from you to the subject, the lighter DOF will be. If you are 2m far from the subject, use 50mm lens and f/2.8 aperture to shoot to achieve about 10cm DOF. Use the same lens and 10m far from the subject, the DOF will be nearly 100cm. For shotter distance, many people just photo cropper, but it ony helps in some accasions. Distance from the subject to the background At last, we will talk about the distance from the subject to the background. The distant the background is far from the subject, the more blurred the background will be. You should notice that the background will be more blurred not the DOF, because DOF will be definitely not changed here. Conclusions Mastering the principle of DOF is one of basic knowledge of photography. If you know when to blur or focus the background, you will be able to easier control the photo. Totally speaking, aperture, focus length, size of sensor and shooting distance are the four main factors that affect the DOF.
