On Tuesday, the Parrish Art Museum officially announced that itwill open the doors of its new home to the public on Saturday,November 10, 2012. The 34,400-square-foot, Herzog & deMeuron-designed building sits on 14 acres in Water Mill and will bethe first art museum built on the East End in more than a century.The new building has a budget of $26.2 million, 95 percent of whichhas been raised to date. We could not be prouder of this amazing accomplishment, saidmuseum director Terrie Sultan. The new building is a beautifulembodiment of the creative legacy of the East End, and withlight-filled galleries, a flexible multi-purpose performance space,and many other public amenities, the Parrish will take its place asa real center for cultural engagement for the entire East End. The November 10 grand opening will be free to the general public.Free admission will continue throughout that weekend Sunday,November 11, and Monday, November 12, Veterans Day. Preceding thepublic opening, a series of special events for the stakeholders whomade the new building possible donors, trustees, the buildingteam, government officials, artists, members, and volunteers will take place on November 3 and November 4. Museum members,donors and residents of the Southampton and Tuckahoe Common SchoolDistricts will enjoy special access to the museum the week prior toits public opening from November 5 to November 9. After a journey that started for me in 1998, the completion ofthe new Parrish is like arriving in the Promised Land, saidNorman Peck, treasurer of the Parrish s Board of Trustees andmember of the Building Committee. This museum stands for warmthand education of an aesthetic nature for future generations. The new structure is nearly double the size of the museum sexisting facility on Jobs Lane, and provides triple the exhibitionspace, with 12,200 square feet of flexible gallery space. A seriesof north-facing skylights will allow for natural light to be evenlyfiltered throughout the galleries. Some 4,600 square feet will beavailable for special exhibitions while 7,600 square feet is to bededicated to the museum s permanent collection. That collectionfeatures more than 2,600 works ranging from the 19 th century to the present, a portion of which, come November, will beon view for the first time in the museum s 115-year history. The galleries are the heart and soul of the new museum, notedAlicia Longwell, Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Chief Curator, Artand Education. Now, for the first time, the Parrish will have thewherewithal to make available on a permanent basis ourdistinguished collection of American art, while simultaneouslypresenting special exhibitions. The building is designed to reference the vernacular architectureof the East End, emphasize the relationship of art to nature, andbe flexible and welcoming. In addition to the galleries, there willbe a 2,400 square foot multipurpose room for films, lectures, liveperformances, seminars, dinners and receptions. A caf next to thelobby will offer salads, sandwiches, desserts, as well as beer andwine. The caf opens onto an expansive covered terrace which canbe used for dining, receptions, festivals, performances andworkshops. A cast concrete bench and covered walkway surround themuseum, allowing for contemplation of the landscape. Also containedwithin the building will be administrative and support spaces, aloading dock, administration offices, conservation, and storagespace. Outside landscaping by Reed Hilderbrand consists entirely of nativeplants and the design evokes the natural environments of the EastEnd meadow, wetland, scrub woodland with long views of expansivesky and horizon.
