Catching up with the news stories of the day, majority of TV and radio channels highlighted Louisville Cardinals for their victory over Duke, rightly dedicated to the team spirit with which they performed. Winning a game with such a sizeable margin matters a lot, particularly when you are given to play against a team that is no less than second seeded. But why this win was truly special for the Cardinals is because they cannot underestimate the injury their fighter player Kevin Ware suffered right when this game of basketball was climaxing. Having suffered a leg injury, Kevin was to be hospitalized for a broken right leg leaving him panicked because of the harshness of injury. While sweating for the tough game, they could repeatedly recall those departing words wherein Kevin looked more than promising about the win. His words echoed in the teammates’ ears, “I am just a surgery away from betterment and joining back you guys. Focus on the game and get it for me.” Louisville Cardinals, though committed to throw in their best, were more than convinced that they have to make this game special and to win for Kevin. They could sense the urge behind Kevin’s words and read clearly how their injured teammate was more concerned about this win than his broken leg. In the words of fellow Cardinals, “That chat we had with him during the half-time was no less than a game changer. We did not see any alternate in front of us other than victory. We decided ‘bringing Kevin home’ as our mantra for success, and because we believed in it, it worked.” But there is more to add to the heroism of Kevin Ware. Even away from the court, he was completely involved in the game, visualizing and praying all the time for the Cardinals to come out victorious. He later said, “I felt like God was listening to my prayers, particularly when Luke Hancock defended some brilliant moves from our opponents, failure to do so could have changed the fate of the game. I think God stood there for us especially in those concluding moments.” As the tourney proceeded, Louisville Cardinals looked more than excited to win the title and were convinced with Kevin’s presence, though it he was there out of the court. This injury could keep him away from the game but not from that diehard urge to win, to support, to cheer up for his team, and to be in the role of a motivator. Rejoicing his team’s title win, he looks assured to join the action soon.
