Extensive police raids were conducted in the Kannavam reserveforest near Koothuparamba on Thursday as part of the ongoing policeoperation to nab key accused involved in the murder ofRevolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T.P. Chandrashekharan nearVadakara on May 4. The police personnel unearthed some materials for assemblingcountry-made bombs from the house of a Communist Party of India(Marxist) worker during the raid. Large posse of armed police personnel equipped to encounter anycontingent situation including resistance to the raids combed everynook and cranny of the reserve forest following intelligencereports that some of the key accused in the Chandrashekharan murdercase could be hiding in the safe havens arranged in the forest orin nearby strongholds of the CPI(M) known in local parlance as‘party villages'. The combing operation that started at8-30 a.m. on Thursday lasted more than seven hours, the policesaid. The police said that the police team led by Koothuparamba CircleInspector K.V. Babu seized explosive materials for makingcountry-made bombs from the house of the CPI(M) worker identifiedas Kariyath Pradeepan during the search in his house at Kottayilinside the forest. The search followed the seizure of acountry-made revolver from him by the Malur Police Sub Inspector onMay 23 night. The police also searched interior areas of the forestduring the raid, he added. The police personnel totalling 100 including 60 men of the KeralaArmed Police fanned out across the reserve forest in four groupsheaded by officers including Mr. Babu, Koothuparamba SI SurendranKallyadan, Panur SI P.R. Manoj and Kathirur Additional SISivadasan. The police faced no hurdles during the raids onsuspected hideouts in the interior parts of the forest. The policeraids on Thursday were a continuation of the similar combingoperation conducted on Wednesday night at Kaitheri, a CPI(M)stronghold near Koothuparamba. The police sources said that the raids in the CPI(M) strongholds inand around Koothuparamba followed the information that some of thekey accused in the Chandrashekharan murder could be hiding in safehavens inside party villages of forest areas. The specialinvestigation team (SIT) probing the murder has gatheredinformation from the CPI(M) workers already arrested in connectionwith the murder that some party leaders in the Koothuparamba andPanur areas were involved in the conspiracy to eliminate the RMPleader. The suspicion that the absconding assailants ofChandrashekharan might be hiding in the party villages or theforest was based on the finding by the SIT that some of theassailants visited Koothuparamba and contacted some CPI(M) leadersbefore they went in hiding. Koothuparamba CPI(M) office secretaryC. Babu had been nabbed by the SIT for questioning and releasedfollowing a protest by CPI(M) leader M.V. Jayarajan in front of theVakadakra Police Station demanding his release.
