Do you want to be a successful website copywriter? You'll need the proper clothing if you want to stand heads above the crowd. Here are some essential items to clothe yourself for the role: The first thing you do before you get dressed in the morning is put on undergarments. To be a successful website copywriter, you'll need the undergarment of confidence in order to proceed. Confidence in yourself as a businessperson. Confidence in your writing abilities. Confidence to tackle difficult clients successfully. Putting confidence on before anything else will help your other clothing fit better as a website copywriter. Everybody's different on this one but let's go with the pants before the shirt. Let's slip on the social media pants. If you don't control it, social media will easily control you. It helps to link your social media sites together so when you post to one, it auto-posts to another, e.g.: When I post to Linkedin, it posts to Twitter. When I post to Facebook, it posts to Plaxo. You can use one-post-does-it-all tools like ping.fm but I prefer going to each site. LinkedIn has been a powerful social networking tool to build my successful website copywriter status. I usually spend about 30 minutes a day, posting a tip of the day, connecting with new people, or answering questions from other members. Take time and build a dynamic profile. It might be helpful to buy an easy-to-follow eBook like Lewis Howes', Master LinkedIn Strategies. Just as a carpenter puts on a tool belt so he can efficiently complete his project, you'll need a writer's technical belt for completing your projects successfully. Ask other copywriters, subscribe to top copywriter e-zines, and buy plenty of resource books. The Wealthy Freelancer by Steve Slaunwhite, Pete Savage, and Ed Gandia is the best one I've read so far. The Chicago Manual of Style and The Copywriters Handbook are good technical resources. Your local library has more resources for writing than you'll ever need. Although you have to return the books, you can still scan pages and use the information in your technical belt. Two books I've found very helpful are Words That Sell and Phrases That Sell. One of the best copywriting/advertising resources I've read is Hey Whipple, Squeeze This by Luke Sullivan. If possible, purchase a couple of comprehensive copywriting mail order programs as well as coaching sessions. They can be worth their weight in gold. The best way to keep your website copywriting britches up is to practice your craft everyday. I know my website copywriting has improved by leaps and bounds just by regularly writing articles for various e-pubs. One great but simple technical secret is to just break up your paragraphs into small, readable chunks. Nothing turns me off more than visiting a site with walls of text that provide no breaks for the eye. After your social media pants are zipped and buttoned, your marketing shirt goes on next. The arms of your marketing shirt should include a combination of methods such as cold calling, direct sales letters, postcards, and any number of other methods. You should market in busy times as well as slow times. The forward motion of consistency will pay off! Track the results of your efforts so you can see where your marketing efforts and dollars are the most effective. Now you'll need to slip on your creative socks and shoes. You can adorn yourself with confidence, technical knowledge, social media skills, and marketing tools but if you don't have a creative bone in your body, it'll be very difficult to complete projects successfully. Creativity will have to fit comfortably in order to walk into taglines, slogans, and compelling website copy for your clients. As a successful website copywriter, you can nurture creativity by working on several different projects throughout your day, by simply exercising, by reading creativity books such as The War of Art by Steven Pressfield, and by doing non-work related creative projects along the way. Your confidence will grow as you develop your technical and social media skills and your creative self will be strengthened along the way.
