When it comes to making a statement in any room, interior designers often turn to custom furniture. Once the reserve of only the wealthiest, prices of bespoke furniture have come down dramatically not due to reduced quality, but thanks to modern manufacturing techniques. This allows home owners on a budget to add a unique centrepiece to any room for a reasonable price.
The first step in adding a focal point to a room is by seeing what?s already there. Look around the room. What is the biggest feature? Start with built in features. Is there a fire place? Perhaps a large window, or maybe a built in wardrobe. If you have any of these, this would be the focal point of your room. In this instance, you should build your furniture arrangement around the existing focal point, or build it in to it, for example a custom made fire place or wardrobe.
Alternatively, more modern houses may not have such features. In this case, you will have more flexibility in what your focal point can be. This allows a wider range of custom furniture to be used as a focal point, rather than being limited to what?s already built in. You may already have a furniture based focal point, which could be replaced with another piece, or there may not be anything in there already, meaning you have a lot more freedom to get creative!
Once you have decided what your focal point should be, its time to collaborate with your custom made furniture manufacturer or workshop. It's a good idea to go to them with some ideas on the kind of look you want to go to for your room. A great idea is to bring newspaper cuttings, or create a Pinterest pin board and bring that along on an iPad to share your inspiration.
From there, the craftsman can take inspiration from what you have already come up with and start drawing up an initial design. Remember to talk to the craftsman about materials. Cost is an issue, but also consider how the colour of certain materials will affect the room. A dark wood may make the room look dull, while a lighter wood may not give the effect you wanted. Don?t forget that wood also darkens with age, so think about how the piece may look in a few years time. Ask the craftsman about how your custom furniture is constructed. You?ll want it to last for many years to come, so make sure it will be able to withstand your lifestyle.
Finally, think about how you will decorate the piece. How will you accessorise the room? Consider what paintings you will be hanging on the wall, or how mirrors could affect the look of the room. Could your custom furniture be accentuated by plants surrounding it? Don't forget to neglect what colour your walls will be. Use contrasting colour to make the furniture stand out. For example, if you are using a dark shade of wood, use light coloured paint on the surrounding walls.
