A Purdue research team has developed a method to mass producedevices that have the potential to improve mobile device reception. The nanomechanical devices called nanoresonators address the coreissue with portable electronic devices. Current devices use lessefficient transistors and receptors, resulting in prolonged mobiledata download and upload speeds, low call clarity and droppedcalls. Using nanoresonators in mobile phones addresses theseissues. Jeff Rhoads, associate professor of mechanical engineering,said in addition to providing faster data download and uploadspeeds, phone calls will be more clear and drop less, all whileusing less bandwidth and power. "If we can make systems operate on narrower and narrower bandwidth,you can have more and more cell phones, PDA's, and other types ofelectronic devices that you can cram in (on the electromagneticspectrum)," Rhoads said. Nanoresonators are roughly 1000 times thinner than a strand of hairand have broad applications beyond portable technology, many ofwhich are still unknown. Saeed Mohammadi, associate professor ofelectrical engineering, has been working on the project for thepast three years in the Birck Nanotechnology Center. The tinydevice, which Mohammadi compared to a guitar string, functions whentension is applied to a tiny silicon beam. "Unlike a guitar wire, which always has tension on it, this youhave to apply the tension so it can resonate ... The way you puttension on it is by applying electric voltage to attract it,"Mohammadi said. When the silicon resonates, it is able to efficiently filter inputsignals and turn them into clearer output signals. This translatesinto better clarity and more efficient usage of the input signals,which can come from a variety of sources. One source is theelectromagnetic spectrum, which is used to relay signals tocellular devices and AM, FM and satellite radios. Nanoresonators have been around for about 10 years and probablywon't be seen in the market for about another 10 years. Previousmodels have been too unstable for the market's standards, but theteam said they have developed high efficiency devices that can bemass produced and utilized in the technology industry. "Our innovation, if you would, is being able to make these in a waythat's feasible on a corporate, industrial scale," Rhoads said. "Ittakes it from something that you can make one or 10 of in theresearch lab to something that you can build a million or billionin the industry.".
