If you want to work in computers or networking, you have to earn a Computer Technology Industry Association or CompTIA certification. The computer marketplace is broken into different areas of expertise and they don't often overlap. One computer professional may be trained in programming. Another will have a certificate in hardware repair. The programmer won't fix computers and the repairman won't write software. Both have earned a certificate from CompTIA that shows the owner passed a written test in the subject of the certificate. Currently, CompTIA offers certificates in: Security The Security group of certificates mean the owner knows security essentials such as risk management, cryptography, access control, security analysis and the integration of communications, computing and business. The successful applicant will be able to design and engineer networks which include state-of-the-art security features. Hardware The A+, Server+ and Network+ certificates state that the owner has been tested in hardware repair and maintenance for servers, networks and stand alone computers. Training The CompTIA Certified Technical Trainer certifies that the owner has mastery of instructor skills such as preparation, communication, preparation and evaluation in a classroom setting. Documents The Certified Document Imaging Architect certificate states that the owner is competent in the imaging of documents and their storage and management. Linux Linux is a certificate showing that the owner is competent to deal with Linux-based networks. Linux is open-source server software in wide use in industry. Projects The owner of a Project+ certificate will be able to start, plan, execute, present for executive approval, support and successfully finish projects in government and industry. Convergence Convergent Technologies is a company providing a wide variety of services centered on voice over IP (VOIP). The company deals with basic telecommunications, data communications, computer/telephone integration, local area networks and broadband technologies. Printing The Printing and Document Imaging certificate proves competence when dealing with printers, copiers, scanners and fax machines. Usually, these functions are contained within the same machine. The owner of this certificate will understand, electromechanical components, printer operation and maintenance, color theory, networking and connectivity. Storage The Storage+ certificate covers network fundamentals in storing, backing up and restoring data and maintenance of the network components which handle those processes. Cloud Essentials Cloud computing deals with transferring data back and forth from computers to storage servers over the internet. Strata The Strata group of certificates provides basic knowledge for people involved in selling, installing and trouble-shooting computers and networks. It also covers environmental concerns. Healthcare Computers and networks in a hospital setting require a knowledge beyond most other settings. The owner of this certificate will understand health care regulations, proper behavior in a hospital or clinic setting, medical business issues and the special security issues present in the health care system. Until 2011, CompTIA offered certificates that were valid for a lifetime. In 2011, the company changed the length of certification to three years. After three years, A+, Network+ and Security+ certificate holders have to take continuing education classes or retake the exam. CompTIA applied this policy to new certificates obtained after the policy change.
