Tanzania Safari: Where to Go in Serengeti National Park

Camping,Travel & Tourism,Recreation & Leisure

If there is a place in Africa that has been a subject of so many books, documentaries, television shows, movies, pictures, and talk other than the Masai Mara National Reserve is the Serengeti National Park. Located in Northern Tanzania and on the southern part of the Masai Mara, the two parks from the Mara – Serengeti eco-system. The word Serengeti comes from the Masai word ‘Siringet’ which means endless plains. This National Park covers an area of 14, 763 SQKM and forms part of the great migration routes.

Serengeti National park can be divided into 3 vegetation areas. We have the open grasslands in the south-eastern area with open woodlands in the north and a combination – mosaic grass and woodland to the north. This gives one a rich ecosystem with so much to see. Without the knowledge of what to see, you might not know where to start from. Here are some places you can visit when in Serengeti National Park:

Moru Kopjes

The word ‘Moru’ is Maasai for Old. Moru Kopjes is an ancient granite rock that has been left standing after centuries of erosion and weathering. Moru Kopjes often acts as a vantage point for the predators not only to scan there teritory but to look out for prey as they come to drink water.

Simba Kopjes

Named after the lions as a result of the king of th jungle frequenting this rock to lie or sun bath. At other times you will get the baboons and monkeys taking advantage of the absense of the King. Birds are other interesting creatures you will enjoy here.

Serengeti Plains

It is believed that the formation of Serengeti’s endless rolling landscape dates back to about 3 million years when there were massive eruptions of Ngorongoro and other volcanoes within the area. There was a thick rain of ash settled over the plains which encouraged the growth of shallow rooted grasses, packed with nutritious minerals. As a result of availability of these grass with minerals, the wildebeest turned the area into the largest mammal maternity. it proof the fact that this is the best place of the wildebeest to give birth in this area.

Seronera Valley

This area has several kopjes with many watercourses and rivers. This provides some of the best places to enjoy game drives when on an Africa safari in Tanzania. The riverine forest along the Seronera River is rich in hippos and other African wildlife. If you are looking for great wildlife then this is the most rewarding circuit.

Lake Ndutu

Lake Ndutu surrounding features short grass plains which hosts great numbers of gazelle, zebras and wildebeest before the annual migration. Lake Ndutu is also known as Lagarja is a seasonal lake and is surrounded by beautiful acacia trees and without doubt is the main attraction of the area. This seasonal lake supports a number of giraffes, a range of flora and fauna. It is also rich in bird life with lesser flamingoes being the major eye catching of the area.

Western Corridor

This is a 50 km wide strip of land along the Grumeti River from west of Seronera area running to Lake Victoria. Some topographical feature that mey interest you when on Africa safari in Tanzania here include rivers, valleys, hills and floodplains. Grumeti River is a perrenial river with fringing belt of riparian woodland that dissect the western corridor. This is where lions and crocodiles lie in wait for the weak and injured when the migration crosses this section. The corridor does however also support a substantial size of resident wildlife like the ever-present predators, giraffe, eland, hartebeest, huge hippos and impala, which cluster along the river.

Lobo Area – Northern Serengeti

Lobo Hills are probably the most conventional scenic section of the Serengeti National Park. The rolling hills with massive granite outcrops provides a great photogenic scene. The area also supports a rich variety of resident wildlife and has retained a tangible wilderness character taht is often interrupted twice annually by the passing wildebeest migration parade.

Now that you know where to go to when enjoying an Africa safari in Tanzania in the serengeti National park, what are you waiting for? Time to pack and enjoy a Tanzania safari to Serengeti.
