What exactly are IT certifications? In the computer world, it is a document that tells companies that you apply to that you have had training. To the average person, who is not in the IT field, it means very little. To the average technician, it is a stepping stone to further your career. There are many different types of certifications floating around the IT world today. The three most popular include Microsoft certifications, A+, and Cisco. Will having one, two, or all three of these guarantee you a job? No. There are no guarantees, but certifications do help. It means that the applicant in question took the time to study in the field in which he or she intends to work. While many people pursue college degrees in the IT field, there are those that go for specific certifications. Why? Because it is a shortcut into the IT field. It offers more focused study of the field in which an applicant hopes to get into, without wasting time sitting in a classroom studying unrelated or irrelevant topics. Many companies who have a large IT department require certifications in lieu of college degrees because the position requires specific knowledge. For example, Company 'A' needs a certified repair and troubleshooting technician for home user personal computers. An A+ certification is specifically for that type of thing. A broader scope of all personal computers, which is what Company 'A' needs. Having a college degree in IT would be 'overkill' in some eyes, making the applicant 'overqualified'. Choosing the correct IT certification to get is dependent upon the ultimate goal of the person in question. Do they want to keep growing within one company, or branch out into different areas of the IT field? If they are content to build and repair, then the lowest level certifications would do them well. However, if they wish to grow and expand their knowledge, then they would continue to get different certifications, and keep going until they have attained them all. Doing this not only ensures that they have knowledge, but also shows that they are willing to go the 'extra mile' to accomplish their goals in their job. Having multiple certifications is a good thing. As stated earlier, choosing the certifications however, is another matter. Keeping your certifications current is a must, as the field changes constantly. This is something one must keep in mind when choosing which certifications to attain. Do they go for a CISCO certification, or a Microsoft Certification? Or both? Either certification would benefit each applicant, and would put the person ahead of those who do not have certifications. While attaining certifications is time consuming, it is not as long as a four year degree from a major university. There are study guides for each certification if you are willing to spend the money. The cost of the certifications pay for themselves over time, with knowledge and better job opportunities. With certain certifications, a potential employee could make more money as their skill set is above that of a normal off-the-street candidate who tinkers with things in the IT field. It is all a matter of choice. Take the time to attain the certifications, or take your chances and learn on the job.
