The Jathika Namal Uyana – meaning the National Na tree (Iron wood tree) Garden is believed to have come into existence during King Devanampiyatissa's time. However archeological and historic findings date it back to 924AD to the time of King Dappula IV. During this time a group of monks made the forest their monastery and in fact gave all those who were persecuted by official's refuge. Thus King Dappula made an official declaration stating that the Namal Uyana was a human sanctuary – the first such sanctuary in Sri Lankan history. As an act of penance and retribution the monks made all those who had sought refuge plant iron wood trees and nurture them. This simple act has now led to an immense stretch of iron wood forest encompassing over 260 acres in the dry zone area of Dambulla. This is now the largest such forest in Asia. Iron wood itself is endemic to a few South East Asian countries and one variety Diya Na is endemic to Sri Lanka. Iron wood is not only the national tree of Sri Lanka but is also of medicinal and religious importance. The forest is also home to many medicinal plants and herbs growing in the shelter provided by the Na trees. For these reasons, the forest is now a protected sanctuary. However there is a grave danger to the natural resources found in the forest. Historic findings such as welcome stones, monastery and temple remains and such can be found in one section of the forest. Animals such as leopard, elephant, and deer and close to 18 different species of birds can be found in this Garden. For those looking for a Sri Lanka Hotel in the North Central Province of the country with an interest to visit the historic wonders found in the area, Heritance Kandalama provides an ideal option. As far as luxury and comfort go this is one of the best Sri Lanka Hotels, which has also been built in a highly acclaimed environmental manner. Google+
