A recent study of the mobile workers stationed on the various sites scattered around the oil sands that surround Fort McMurray showed that a worryingly high amount of the workers never actually ventured into the city (or urban service area to give it its proper name) of Fort McMurray itself. The 2012 census showed that whereas 9.1% of the workers questioned stated that they visited Fort McMurray once a week, a startling 28% said they never visited at all. Reasons for this included the unsociable shifts - many of Fort McMurray's amenities were likely to be closed when they did happen to have some free time, the distance from their sites to the city, and the fact that their accommodation - mostly camps or lodges - had all the amenities such as grocery stores that they needed. The majority of workers who did state that they visited Fort McMurray cited shopping for groceries and clothing as their main reason for visiting. This is somewhat of a shame, as Fort McMurray offers so much more than grocery shopping. OK, unsociable shifts can't be helped, however, if you're a worker who happens to get a weekend off, here is a guide giving some ideas on how to make the most of a weekend in Fort McMurray. Friday - First of all, it is a good idea to get yourself booked into some accommodation. You don't want to be spending yet another weekend in the camp lodgings I'm sure, and it pays to be downtown in the heart of the action. There are a number of fine hotels in town, however there's also a fantastic range of luxury furnished accommodation in Fort McMurray that offer the same levels of comfort and convenience as a hotel but at a fraction of the cost. Once settled, it's time to hit the town. Grab some steak at one of the many restaurants, wash it down with a couple of beers then head out to The Casman Centre and catch local ice hockey team, The Oil Barons in action. After that, hit one of the many bars in town, but take it easy; you've got a big day ahead of you tomorrow. Saturday - Clear the cobwebs with an early morning swim. Head out of your furnished apartment to hit the gym. Then it's back into town to catch some festivities. There's nearly always a festival of some sort going on in Fort McMurray, be it music, film or performing arts. If it's winter, take part in ice sculpture, or why not enjoy a skate at one of the many ice rinks in town. In the evening, why not dine out again, there's enough choice on offer. Sunday - After an action packed day of taking all that the urban service area has to offer, it's time to head out into the wilderness surrounding the area. Take a scenic drive out to one of the outlying communities such as Anzac, where you can spend an adrenaline fuelled afternoon of skiing, snowboarding and racing around on a snowmobile. After that, relax by dipping your rod into a hole cut in the frozen lake and enjoy a spot of ice fishing. After eating your catch by a warm campfire, it's time to head back to camp to share stories of your unforgettable weekend with your jealous colleagues.
