Four school bond measures faring well All the school bond measures in the county easily hurdled their 55percent threshhold for passage. The Cupertino Union School District was seeking to pass a $220million bond measure, which would expand capacity in the northernend of the growing district, remodel buildings and fund two wavesof technology replacement. The Milpitas Unified School District will renovate aging buildingsand systems with the $95 million Measure E. With some absenteeballots counted, it had a comfortable lead. It will cost propertyowners $50 per $100,000 assessed valuation. The Mountain View Whisman School District's $198 million Measure Gbond measure will update of technology, remove hazardous materialsand upgrade security systems. The district also will replaceplumbing, electrical, heating and ventilation systems. The $198million bond measure will cost property owners $30 per $100,000assessed valuation. The West Valley-Mission Community College District will retrofitbuildings at West Valley College and replace portable classroomswith permanent structures at Mission College with Measure C, a $350million bond issue. It will cost property owners $16.25 per$100,000 assessed valuation. Santa Clara County Measure A, which would return control of thejails to the sheriff, also was winning by a huge margin. Simitian leads county supervisors race As predicted, voters granted state Sen. Joe Simitian's wish -- bydemoting the powerful lawmaker back to county supervisor after hewas termed out of the Legislature. Simitian easily fended off a challenge by Cupertino City CouncilmanBarry Chang and former Cupertino Mayor Kris Wang. Because he wonmore than a 50 percent of the vote, he avoided a runoff inNovember. During the campaign, Simitian said his experience both at thecounty and state levels will help him steer the county throughtough economic times. "I'm at a point in my life where the work I do is more importantthan the title I hold," he said during the low-key campaign. Simitian is not alone. Politicians have been leaping at the chanceto run for less powerful posts since California became the firststate to approve term limits more than two decades ago -- so muchso that political experts even have a name for the phenomenon:reverse flow.
