Formica has been a staple in American homes since 1913. That means there is a lot of worn, outdated and grungy Formica out in the world. If you are the not-so-proud owner of outdated Formica, don't despair. You don't have to rip out the counters and replace them. You can paint your Formica in a weekend; and if you don't love the results, you won't be out a lot of money. Instructions of how to refinish formica kitchen countertops step by step as follows: Firstly, clean the counter with trisodium phosphate (TSP). TSP is available at hardware stores and will remove oil and grime. Scrub the counters with TSP, removing all grease and oils. Sponge off the counter and let the Formica dry completely. Secondly, sand the counter with fine-grit sandpaper. Use a palm sander for best results. A palm sander will be more efficient, and the vibration from the sander will create a more uniform surface than hand sanding. Sand enough to create texture on the surface of the counter. Thirdly, prime the counter with a bonding primer. Bonding primers like B-I-N or Glidden Gripper will do a great job of adhering to the Formica and will make the paint on the counter more durable. Apply the primer with a foam roller. Foam rollers are a good choice for counters because they create a smooth, even surface. The primer will create a good base for the paint. Fourthly, paint the counter. Choose water-based latex paint or enamel paint. Either type will work on Formica. Enamel is a good choice because it is highly durable, but it also has a high-gloss finish. Latex will not be as durable but is available in matte or satin. Apply the paint in the same way that you applied the primer. Apply multiple thin coats of paint until you have complete coverage. Fifthly, apply a coat of polyurethane to the painted Formica. Roll on the polyurethane using a clean foam roller. You may see tiny bubbles in the polyurethane when it is first applied. They will disappear after a few minutes. Let the polyurethane dry completely. Sixthly, allow the paint to cure for at least seven days before heavy use. The paint will be soft and easily dented until it is completely cured. Tips & Warnings To maintain the painted finish of your countertops, clean with a damp cloth and a mild cleaner. Wipe up spills immediately and avoid resting hot pots and plates on the counter.
