If you own an in ground pool or an above ground pool, you should already be aware that shocking a swimming pool is part of your pool maintenance. Pool owners shock a pool twice per year and thereafter whenever they feel the chore is necessary. Shocking a pool may be beneficial to your pool water if it's cloudy and if the beginning forms of algae are present. Shock comes in several forms. The majority of shocks are designed for chlorine-based systems. Baquacil filters however, being a chlorine-free chemical system, require a special product called BaquaShock. Chlorine-reliant pools can take either calcium hypo or lithium pool shock products. Above-ground pools with vinyl pool liners are required to use one of these two latter products. Lithium shock comes in liquid form and is applied directly into the water. Calcium shock, however, comes in a granulated form and must be mixed and dissolved in a separate solution prior to being applied to the pool surface. This is so that it will not stain the liner of your pool. Generally, granulated shock treatments are cheaper compared to liquid shock treatments. Pools are generally shocked a minimum of twice during the season. This is when the pool is opened, usually in the summer time, and again, when the pool is winterized. In between the summer time, especially midway into the summer season, you might also need to shock your above ground or in-ground pool. This is specially true after several days of use by a number of people. During extreme heat waves, chlorine may become less effective. After a heavy rain, the water in your swimming pool may become cloudy. In this case, more doses of chlorine is needed to make the water in the pool clear again. In the event that the water still remains cloudy, then you have to shock your pool again. In short, when regular chlorine fails to maintain cleanliness of water in your above-ground, shock has to be administered. This is what happens when there are a lot of bacteria growing in your pool due to extreme heat or poor maintenance. Determining the amount of shock needed depends on the quantity of water in your above-ground pool. Most shock products are sold in one-gallon sizes for liquid shock. In the case of granulated shock, they come in small bags. These doses of pool shock can be used for a swimming pool with 5,000 gallons of water capacity. This job is very important for the the safety of your family or any person who may use your pool. Before you think about enjoying your above ground pool, you should make sure that the water is clean and safe. This is to prevent any disease caused by bacteria that are maybe present in the swimming pool water. As the saying goes, put safety first, above all. In this way, your family and friends can truly enjoy your pool specially in the summer time. After all, shocking your above ground pool will only take a small fraction of the time that you have fun with it.
