Everyone has given presentations or seen presentations at some point in their career. As a member of the audience, you know whether the speaker kept your attention or not. But, as a speaker, we often do not know whether we are holding our audiences’ attention or if they are daydreaming about something else. Carmie McCook, President of Carmie McCook & Associates, based in Washington, DC, says there are five tips that are a MUST for delivering a killer presentation. Look at your audience: Have you ever given any thought to where you should be looking while given a presentation? Well, the correct answer is right in front of you...at the audience. Carmie McCook says you should make eye contact with individuals in all areas of the room. You should look at faces, not over heads or out into space. Be sure to look at faces in the center of the room as well as people to your left and right, and in the front and back rows. If you do not look engaged with your audience, they will not be engaged with you. Making good eye contact is one of the most important tips for killer presentation skills. Know your subject well: Any time we are knowledgeable about a topic, the easier it is for us to talk about it with others. McCook advises that you should also refresh your knowledge and do additional research if speaking on a topic you have not presented recently. The ability to convey important information with confidence and credibility is essential to giving killer presentations. Show a warm and engaging personality: Carmie McCook cautions that no one enjoys seeing a stiff, emotionless person drone on and one in a monotone voice. Engaging speakers smile when they speak, move about the room, make facial expressions, gesture, and vary their vocal delivery. People enjoy listening to others they “perceive” that they like. And “likeability” is initially judged—within the first two minutes of you speaking--by the way you look and sound, more than by what you say. Showing a winning personality is a terrific killer presentation skill. Keep your presentations brief and to the point: In today’s world fast and furious communication, the attention span of the general public is shorter than ever. The longer someone speaks the more likely they will lose their audience’s attention and key messages are not remembered. The most effective presentations last no longer than 15-20 minutes. Practice! Practice! Practice! : Practicing does not mean memorizing a script! Practicing means rehearsing your presentation so you deliver it in a natural and conversational manner. Practicing means thinking about making good eye contact with the audience, working on varying vocal intonation, using natural gestures, and most of all, smiling. According to McCook, killer presentations are rarely spontaneous. Killer presentations are the result of hours of practice.
