The importance of bangles and bindis in Indian culture

Fashion & Cosmetics
Bangles and bindis are an integral part of Indian culture. Learn more about the significance of these accessories.

One of the reasons the world stands in awe of Indian culture is because of its richness and diversity. India is home to so many different cultures, each of which has specific norms to follow. There are, however, certain norms that are common across multiple sects. For examples, ornaments such as the bangles and accessories such as the bindi is something that every Hindu woman should wear, irrespective of her age. The type of bindis worn by girls is slightly different from that of woman, a fact that has been exploited by the bindi makers to come up with innumerable designs to cater to the changing trends.

The forehead region, between the eyebrows, where the bindi is placed is the home of one of the six chakras present in our body. The kundalini energy which in generated in the base of the spinal cord exits the body from this chakra. Bindis are used by Indian woman to improve their concentration level and retain the kundalini energy in the body. These accessories are also said to warn off the evil eye and keep women hale and hearty. While some women wear the bindi every day of the year, there are some who wear them only during holy or special occasions.

There are many types of bindis and bangles available in the market today. While the traditional value of the bindi continues to exist, many women from other religions and countries have also taken a keen liking to the wearing bindi, an accessory that has been a part of the Indian culture for centuries. Unlike in the case of Hindu women, the others wear the bindi for cosmetic purposes. The evolution of fashion has also resulted in the transformation of the bindi from a small simple red dot to something more elaborate and trendy. The traditional red bindi is worn on a regular basis; however, when one has to attend any celebration or culture event, the bindi worn is completely different. The bindi is carved in different shapes such as the leaf, flower, snake, semi circle, star and more in different colours for women to choose from based on their attire.

Bangles, just like the bindis, are worn extensively by the Indian women. While women a few centuries ago preferred wearing only bangles made of glass or gold, the modern woman craves for variety which is the reason for manufacturers to come up with newer designs that are crafted using various materials. Sea shells, ivory, plastic, bronze and copper are some of the many materials that are used extensively in the bangle making industry currently. Wearing these ornaments is said to bring in good luck and prosperity, which is the main reason for married women to wear it. Brides in Gujarat and Rajasthan are gifted a pair of ivory bangles by their mother in laws when they enter the household for the first time. In the southern part of the country, the bangle is considered to be a symbol of fertility which is the reason it is given to women during their seventh month of pregnancy.
