More and more Minha Casa Minha Vida social housing developments are emerging throughout Brazil and Sumara a city close to the metropolis of Sao Paolo is the latest city to find itself on the investors radar as a number of Minha Vida Minha Vida developments are announced for the city and the surrounding suburbs. A little history about this large city explains why it is becoming so popular One of a series of sizeable cities surrounding Sao Paolo in Brazil is Sumare, an important urban area in Sao Paolo state. Sumare itself has had several other names in the past and is located at Latitude 22.8 degrees south and Longitude 47.3 degrees west. The population these days of the city proper is about two hundred and thirty thousand, more or less the same as Norwich in England or a bit bigger than Providence, Rhode Island in the USA. Although the city is technically independent, many people regard it as a closely connected part of the greater Sao Paolo conurbation. The land area of Sumare is about one hundred and fifty square Kilometres within the city limits. The district is about half a Km above sea level. The settlement had its origins in old Portuguese colonial times. In the 18th century the Imperial Government gave grants of land in the area to favoured settlers who set up farms and homes on the territory. More broad-based land ownership later developed and coffee, the dominant crop in the vicinity emerged as the local economic staple. In the mid nineteenth century, in 1875 in fact, a rapid boost to the local development took place when the railroad came to the town. The company providing the link was the rapidly expanding Paulista Line, which soon became a vital means of communication connecting all the important centres throughout the whole SP region. After a while the early agricultural lands used for coffee became largely exhausted and cultivation of the crop moved to new areas further west. The worn out farmlands were soon taken over by several waves of immigrants who developed other occupations in what was rapidly becoming a densely-populated urban zone, stretching inland from Sao Paolo city itself. Other local industries became important and these included wood products, soap making, bricks and other building materials and of course beverages of all kinds. A more recent addition in local agriculture has been the large scale cultivation of raw materials for pharmaceutical products. Looking back nearly a century, by the early nineteen twenties the town of Reboucas (as it was then called) had developed to the point that it already had most of the amenities of modern life. These included electricity, telephone, a police HQ. a basic hospital and a school. The place was developing rapidly and the municipal authorities had their eye on city status in the future. But a snag cropped up. There was already a town in Brazil with the same name and federal law prohibited two cities with the same name. So, at about this time a movement among local people started to consider renaming the town with a more attractive title. It was decided that the name of a local flower, an orchid, was more popular so the town was re-christened Sumare, following a local referendum in 1945. Almost all the earlier products of the local economy are still present in the Sumare area to some extent, with service industries providing a more recent important layer overlaying the other activities. In summary it is easy to see why this city is so popular and why the minha casa minha vida programme and Brazilian Property Investment are both on the increased with more and more international investment companies looking to Brazil as a viable investment option.
