The Madras High Court has taken a dig at the office-bearers of theBharatiya Janata Party in Krishnagiri district for opposing theinstallation of ‘Periyar' E.V. Ramasamy's statue in a cornerof a government boys' higher secondary school premises atKaveripattinam and filing a case against it through a proxy. Dismissing a writ petition filed by the president of the school'sParents Teachers Association (PTA), challenging a Government Orderpassed on December 11, 2009, Justice K. Chandru wondered how thepetitioner could claim that mere installation of a great leader'sstatue would automatically make the schoolchildren follow atheism. "On the other hand, it is necessary that schoolchildren mustknow the life and mission of Periyar. Ultimately the understandingof the philosophy of such a personality will only help them performthe fundamental duty of developing scientific temper, humanism, spirit of inquiry and reform as enshrined under Article 51-A(h) ofthe Constitution." The judge pointed out that the government accorded permission forerection of the statue only after the executive committee of thePTA gave its consent on September 4, 2008. It was the local BJPleaders who objected to the proposal and insisted on erecting astatue for Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, founder of the RashtriyaSwayamsevak Sangh. Therefore, "it is clearly seen that the petitioner ismotivated in filing the present writ petition at the instance of apolitical party, which does not want to come on record, but at thesame time pressurises people like the petitioner to put forthgrounds which are not only legally untenable, but can never beaccepted by this court," remarked the judge. He held that the government had not committed any irregularity orillegality by issuing the G.O. which granted permission to aprivate organisation to install the bronze statue and maintain itwithout causing any hindrance to the schoolchildren and generalpublic. In fact, the government had rendered great service to a man who hadfought throughout his life against social oppression. "The portrayal by the petitioner in his affidavit regardingPeriyar's teachings only betrays his ignorance about the roleplayed by the great leader in the transformation of Tamil societyin many respects. He cannot be merely labelled as a propagandistfor atheism.".
