Dictating the terms based on autocratic principles is easy but leading with a modest and humble approach keeping the good of others before one’s own interests is something which is difficult to attain and even more difficult to maintain. When Robert Greenleaf coined this term almost three decades back, little did he know that his prophetic words would be the basis on which the quality of leaders will be decided! But now, the situation is such that it has become extremely important to keep these work ethics in mind so this generation of workers is not discouraged from giving their best due to unfavorable circumstances. Servant leadership entails letting the team move ahead. It encompasses a role of a compassionate and emphatic mentor where the autocratic principles are dropped. This also includes a complete understanding about the work process and the best way to do it so that the leader is able to show the right way to complete the task. A servant leader must also be a good listener and be able to communicate as freely with the top management as well as the employees so that the requirements of both the parties are clearly communicated and there are no miscommunications regarding the same. The most important characteristic features that a servant leader needs to display are their genuineness and honesty in dealing with difficult situations. They should be exhibiting a dedication to serve a higher purpose which needs to be prominent through their body language and their approach towards work. Putting people first is the first and foremost requirement of being a leader of this level. Conflict resolution with a cool and compassionate attitude is also an important attribute of a servant leader. A servant leader should also be a person who has been showing tremendous creativity and be capable of setting the right examples for the team members. They must also have a vision for the organization which must be the basis of all their activities and interactions. The author of the article, Vivek Sharma, works at Careesma India Pvt.
