Through the ages, the traditional skill of needle crafting has enabled people to clothe the naked and adorn the hum-drum. Ever since the day when man started walking upright, people have been sewing. The earliest needlecraft can be dated back to 18,000 years ago when the mothers of the upper cave clan started to use needles. Some examples of surviving woven art have been dated to the 5th-3rd century BC. It started out as a very primitive and simple stitch to make clothing and utilitarian items. But in the advent of modern technology and industrialization, people are now provided with fresh from the factory ready-to-wear clothes. As an offshoot of this, people are slowly becoming alienated from the joy of lovingly and painstakingly sewing, tailoring and designing their own clothes and that of their family and loved ones. As people become more and more competent in clicking the keys of their computer keyboard, it seems like we left our hand-sewing skill dormant and out of practice. We can now hardly experience the meticulous yet tender moment of creating clothes we will put on our back as money can now get us more exquisitely wrapped garments so easily. In spite of these, contemporary times have freed us to sew for the love of the process and the amusement of creation. And today, many of us still know the sensual delights of the perfect fabric, the pleasant whirr of a sewing machine, the wonderful interplay of festive or subdued color, and most especially the thrill of the handmade. Learning to do needlecraft as a hobby therefore can be extremely satisfying and practical all at the same time. Needle crafting is a general term used to describe different types of needle and sewing activities including crochet, knitting, cross stitch, quilting, and needlepoint. It is a terrific hobby to take up because it allows one to create a whole host of useful things like garments, household products and in vogue trinkets and accessories, even with just a bit of practice. Whether it is a throw pillow, a wall decor, a cap, a cellular phone case, a pot holder and the like, the practice of generating something out of one’s own creativity, inspiration and fashion sense is exciting. Given a reasonable amount of free time, anybody can plan and create a wide variety of marvelous works of art and love. What makes needlecraft so exceptional is that it adds a personal touch to just about any project making it so much more special. It is sad to note however that many people believe needle crafting requires highly complex hand movements and dexterity and the lack of these will result in a tangle of frustration and despair. They think this is a terribly difficult activity to master and consequently are easily intimidated by it. But honestly, even if you are not born with a crafty bone in your body yet you can thread a needle and follow a pattern then it is highly likely that you can learn to do needle crafts. Given the right basic instructions and with enough practice, just about anyone can learn this ancient art form. needlecraft
