Ok, I'll admit it. I'm guilty. I used to be one of those guys who didn't see anything wrong with giving my wife a microwave oven for Valentine's Day or a new vacuum cleaner for Christmas. I loved getting power tools, or anything else that would help me "get the job done", no matter what that job might be. I was always amazed by the lukewarm reaction I got. Ok, honestly, I wasn't really on any quest to find this secret, I just happened to be walking by one and saw a couple of things through the window that managed to change my life. First off was this really cool diver's watch that had about six different dials and a whole bunch of buttons on it. But, as I was looking through the window, I saw this couple standing by the counter and observed how absolutely delighted the woman was when the guy she was with bought her something called a tennis bracelet. A tennis bracelet? You need a bracelet to play tennis? Who knew? So, as they were walking out of the store, I just had to ask them about it and that was the bombshell. The guy told me, no you didn't need one, it just always made his wife happy when she got a new piece of jewelry. Then he looked at me like I was some kind of idiot, and asked me "Why, where do you shop for your wife?" For the first time in my life, I answered "Uhmmm, at a whole bunch of jewelry stores!" So, I went in and bought her a tennis bracelet too. Of course, old habits die hard, so I also went to the sporting good store next door and got her a tennis racket and can of balls to go with it. I mean, seriously, how was she supposed to play tennis without those too? But when I gave them to her for her birthday the next week, I don't think she ever even bothered to unwrap the sports gear, she just kept looking at that bracelet and smiling from ear to ear. So from then on, I made it my mission to find all the jewelry stores in town, and get familiar with everything they carried. Bracelets, rings, charms, pendants, ear rings, chains. I found out what the difference was between diamonds and cubic zirconium, rubies and garnets, emeralds and jade. I learned everything there was to know about karat weights, and why platinum looked silver but was way more expensive. I have to tell you, learning to shop at jewelry stores is a whole lot easier than trying to get a washer and drier down the basement steps, and guys, trust me on this one, it's a heck of a lot more rewarding too. I sure didn't get breakfast in bed the next day when I gave her that microwave oven.
