Mexico is one of the world’s leading farming producers. According to financial system Watch, it ranks first in the production of onions, avocados, lemons and limes, and second in the production of a variety of fruits and chilies. Mexico’s food processing manufacturing is one of the fastest growing areas of foreign asset. Bus while half of Mexico’s land area is classified as undeveloped, only about 12 percent is being refined, mostly because of mountainous terrain and the high cost of irrigation in drier areas. For the most part, Mexico’s agriculture remains mostly a family or society affair of farming beans, corn and chilies in communal or private land. By many accounts, Mexico is doing just fine with its agricultural production, feeding itself and feeding a growing industry that exports to the U.S. and elsewhere. But now, agriculture is following the path of industrial meeting and developed, as industrial farming takes off in a number of areas in the country. In spite of its own large farming industry, Americans are moving in. According to Reuters, Americans are farming more than 50,000 acres of land in Mexico and employing 11,000 people. American companies have been moving into Mexico since the early nineties, rising tomatoes and onions and other vegetables and fruits in borrowed land. Mexico is also a leader in agricultural modernism. Mexico’s Centro International de Mejoramiento de Maíz y Trigo, (International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center), with backing from Carlos Slim and the William and Melinda Gates foundation is a leading research center where scientists and farmers work together to develop higher elastic and more flexible crops of maize and wheat. Still, Mexico has managed to keep hereditarily customized corn and other modified crops out of the country. Genetically modified corn is disqualified in Mexico, but the argument over GMOs is still a touchy one. The mountains of Oaxaca in south central Mexico, is one of the cradles of corn, and many worry that genetically modified corn could unfavorably affect the thousands of heirloom varieties found there. Like most of Mexico, the corn grown in the mountains of Oaxaca is planted and harvested by individuals and families who farm their small plots. They are mostly survival farmers who keep their corn or sell it at local markets. Now, as the government positions itself to make dramatic changes to modernize the country, there is still no word on what changes might come about to the laws that prevent business farming and foreign farm land for sale in Mexico. After former President Carlos Salinas removed limits on the sale and use of communal land known as ejidos, change came about slowly and was mostly affected by the sale of these lands for developments or into private possession. With less relocation into the United States, many American farmers are finding they are short on workers to plant and harvest their fields. Like manufacturers looking south at maquiladoras back in the 1980's, the large industrial farmers in the U.S. are starting to look at Mexico.
