Oriental rug cleaning is more complicated than cleaning ordinary rugs. These types of rugs are delicate and quite expensive. But it may be wise to have a professional do it, just to be safe. Here are some tips on how to clean your beautiful rug. The first thing to do is to vacuum your rug on both sides, the top and underside, to remove surface dust and dirt. Use a brush nozzle whose bristles are not too hard. Choose a brush attachment with softer bristles to reduce the chances of damaging the delicate fibers and threads on your carpet. Vacuum the tassels too if your rug comes with them. Roll your rug and take it outside, the backyard may be a good place. Unroll it on a clean tarp that is spread on the ground. Fill a bucket with a gallon of water and mix in ¼ cup of liquid dish soap. Mix the solution until soap suds form. Oriental rug cleaning should be done carefully so use a soft brush to gently scrub the soap mixture into your rug. Scrub it in a circular motion until it is thoroughly cleaned. Rinse it under cool running water with a garden hose. Rinse it long enough till you no longer see soap suds flowing down. A good way to rinse it is to hang it on a clothes line. Be sure the clothes line is strong enough to take the weight of wet rug. Spray the rug with water while it hangs on the line to rinse it. You can also squeeze the rug to get rid of excess water. Do not twist the water out the way you would squeeze out water from laundered clothes. Remember that Oriental rug cleaning has to be done with care. You can leave it on the line to drip and then later transfer it on the ground on top of a clean tarp to let it dry flat. Keep the carpet away from direct sunlight to prevent color fading. After the top dries, flip it over to air dry the other side. If your rug is small and not too heavy, you can air dry it on the clothes line itself. Leaving a large rug that is wet and heavy on a line may snap the clothes line and make your newly cleaned carpet fall to the dirty ground. If you choose to leave a large rug on the line, place the tarp underneath to keep the rug clean in case it falls.
