The only problem is that it's hard as heck to get listed there. It's not like a search engine where you just submit your site, wait a couple of days, and you're indexed. The Open Directory is run by volunteers and not very many of them. They don't accept everything that comes along. They have high standards of quality and a massive backlog of other sites that have already submitted. It's a big bottleneck and they take their time, but it's free to get listed. To be accepted, your site has to be really good. It can't be a commercial site and it can't have any spelling or grammar mistakes. The content has to provide valuable information and be unique. If it's a sales page or a site full of recycled PLR content, they'll toss it for sure. The Application Process The first step in applying is to find the right category and subcategory for your site. They have categories and you have to browse through them. Just a warning - they'll reject your site outright if you've submitted it to the wrong category, so take some time and make sure it's a match. Once you've chosen category and subcategory, add your link and follow the instructions. After choosing categories, there's not much other thinking you have to do; just follow the prompts. The Waiting Is the Hardest Part Another difficult thing about the Open Directory is that they don't tell you if your site has been rejected. They must be too busy with other things. The only way to find out is to contact the editor for your particular category. Each category has its own. Send them an extra polite email asking them about the status of your site. It's important to wait a while before you do this. It can take them anywhere from a couple of days to a year to finally decide about your site. I'd give it at least a couple of weeks. You don't want to anger the editors! If your site has been rejected, you have to wait to resubmit it again. They advise you to submit only one link at a time and to make all necessary changes if it's been rejected before resubmitting. It takes a lot of patience to get listed in the Open Directory. You're probably tired already just from reading this. But if you can get listed there, you've paved the way to success for your site. You'll get great backlinks forever without even trying.
