Although the city of Pelling is part of the West Sikkim district in the state of Sikkim, it is not a very well known region to the people of rest of India. But, in its lap, this hill station encompasses a large number of forested landscapes, hilly terrain, waterfalls and temples and monasteries. Most important during pelling sightseeing tours is the visit to such points in the hill station, from where the Himalayan ranges and Kanchenjunga can be sighted from close. In recent years, it is being developed with good roads and hotel accommodations, for bringing in more number of tourists. Historically, not much significance is associated with Pelling, which is perched at a height of 2150 mts, although the Chogyal Dynasty had this place as their capital. Known for good trekking routes, the hill station is the starting point for a variety of trek routes. • Pemayangtse Monastery is a popular destination for Pelling sightseeing, which immediately gives information about the spread of Buddhist culture into this region. It is one of the oldest monasteries of Sikkim, built in the 17th century AD. Although, initially the monastery was built in a small scale, in the later years, it was expanded by subsequent Buddhist preachers. It is found close to the famous trek route of Dzongri. From this monastery, during Pelling sightseeing tours, tourists can clearly have a look of mount Kanchenjunga. In the monastery, one can find a rich collection of Buddhist artefacts, memorabilia, antiques, Buddha idols, scriptures and many other items. • Kaluk is famous among the Places to visit in Pelling, which is known for the rich collection of rhododendrons. It is situated about 26 kms from Pelling and covers up a lot of area. The basic theme of this village is the Bersay Rhododendron Sanctuary. It is having plenty of natural resources and is highly suitable for nature lovers. Kaluk comprises mostly of the Lepcha Tribals. • Sewra Garden Park or Rock Garden is presently under the Sikkim government. It is made up of many rocks, boulders, and zigzag roads. Sewarao is so named because of the king who ordered its construction. It is located a few kilometres down the road from the Karchen Hydro Electricity Powerhouse. In this well maintained rock garden with swimming pools and clean and polished rock, there is an annual celebration of Maghe Mela in 2nd week of January. • Rimbi Waterfalls is supposedly a great place for Pelling sightseeing, which is visited by the tourists. This beautiful area is located about 12 kms from Pelling and 5 kms from darap. The Karchen Hydro Electricity Power House is adjacent to the falls. This power house is the oldest in Sikkim, probably built in the 1970s, during the era of the last Sikkimese king. After the falls, the water flows as the Rimbi River, which is a favourite place for fishing. • Khangchendzonga National Park is found towards the north of Pelling, with an area of 850 sq km. This park has very undulating terrains so that the height goes from 1600 mts to about 8600 mts, thereby making it one of the highest national parks of the country. Khangchendzonga Peak is located within the area of this national park. The flora and fauna found inside the park are such that these can grow in extreme cold climates. It is also considered to be the end of many trek routes, which are seen in the Pelling hill station. Having a major Buddhist influence, the monasteries is a common thing in the Pelling sightseeing. These have been built at different times, with many monks living in these locations for their education and meditation. Apart from these structures, the places to visit in Pelling are many and this goes on to showcase the natural beauty surrounding the Pelling hill station.
