If you want to learn English, taking classes and immersing yourself in the language are great ways to do just that. By incorporating a multi-method approach, you will develop your knowledge of grammar, sentence structure, and fluency. Although this can be a challenging language to learn, it can be done with practice and perseverance. Classes There are a variety of ways you can learn English through classes. You can sign up for an in-person course at your local community college. You can take an online class from virtually any location if you have access to a computer and the Internet. You can even purchase or check out DVDs and audiotapes with step-by-step instructions that you can watch at home or listen to in your car. There are pros and cons to each of these delivery methods. An in-person class will allow you to ask questions of your instructor, meet other non-native language speakers, and practice with fellow students during class. The downside of an in-person class is that you will have to be there at a specific time and day throughout the course of a semester. Online courses are convenient but they lack the social interaction and you'll miss the chance to practice with others. DVDs and audio courses are convenient, inexpensive, but again, lack social interaction. Immersion One of the best ways to learn English is to surround yourself with others who are speaking this language. Going to stores and speaking with the storekeepers will allow you to practice. Having conversations with American, English, or other native-language-speaker friends can be a wonderful way to become fluent and to gain confidence. If you want to learn a language, spending substantial time in countries where the natives speak it will be a wise move. Being immersed in the language gives you a chance to understand sentence structure, double meanings of words, grammar, and even to become familiar with slang. When a student wants to become fluent, immersion is key. Sometimes students take classes to gain confidence and then move into immersion. Other times, this process is reversed: being surrounded by English speakers and then refining this knowledge through formal coursework. Once you decide you are ready to learn English, there are ways you can accomplish your goals. You can enroll in a community college and take classes in-person. You can take a course over the Internet. You can receive instructions from a DVD, video, or audiotape. You can practice immersion by surrounding yourself with friends who speak the language and going out into public places and speaking with storekeepers, waiters, and others in the community. Once you decide to become bilingual or trilingual by adding this language to your knowledge base, many opportunities will present themselves to expand your life. Get a grasp on the English language.
