You don't realize how important fresh air is until you're stuck somewhere without the ability to access it. Whether it is on a lunch break that you stroll outside and take a deep breath, or coming home from a very polluted area, it is easy to take fresh air for granted. I recently discovered the same thing about windows. I was working a standard office job and there was one small window just ahead of my work space. I never considered that having it there was good, bad, or otherwise. It was present and that was fine. I changed jobs about six weeks ago. I am now working in an office for a bigger company, making a little bit more money, and I think this position is more stable than the last one. However, I work in a cubicle. The way the office is set up I cannot see outside the building easily without leaving my department. I had no idea how claustrophobic this would make me. Spending eight hours a day in a closely confined space was never an issue when I could peak outside and see the world. Now I feel trapped. From the time I get to work my stomach turns and I get just a little bit nervous that I may not be able to escape the area in which I am situated. I wonder if this is how zoo animals feel? Since I changed jobs I find that driving to and from work has become different and not just because I am driving south instead of north. I now commute with the car windows open. My choice of radio stations has shifted from talk to soothing sounds of nature. When I get home at night the first thing I do is open all of the windows. My husband says that I should look for a new job. He is tired of living with a crazy woman who is more concerned with the windows than how she looks, what is cooking for dinner, or whether to go on vacation or buy a new car. As I begin my job search, I am concerned with the hours, commute, company, and demands of the position. However, I am more caught up in the work environment and whether I'll be able to see the world from my desk. I'm not asking for a corner office or an executive suite, just a little glimpse of the outside. I don't think I'd make a good prisoner. Apparently being confined to small spaces is more of an issue than I could ever imagine. If they have windows Portland, OR residents often like them to look nice.
