News CEDIA's Annual Benchmarking Survey Finds Electronic SystemsContractors Optimistic About the Future (20/7/2011) The Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association (CEDIA)has released key findings from its 2011 Benchmarking Survey, whichevaluates the state of the CEDIA member electronic systemscontractor businesses for calendar year 2010 and reports on 2011expectations. Results from the survey indicate that companies arebeginning to see some relief from the economic downturn;respondents anticipate their number of projects new opportunitiesfor growth to increase in 2011. - Respondents reported that their gross revenue increased by 13%from 2009 to 2010. - Average net profit margin rose to 4.1% in 2010 from 3.5% in 2009,after having dropped by nearly half from 6.8% in 2007. - The median number of projects for an ESC company in 2010 was 41,with an average project size of $32,000. - Remodeling and retrofit work in existing homes continues to bethe leading source of revenue for an ESC company, making up 63% ofgross revenue. - Respondents reported that "systemsintegration/control" was the most profitable product categoryfor them in 2010. - While still the largest category, the "home theater/mediarooms" product category dropped significantly as a percentageof gross revenue from 24% in 2009 to 17% in 2010. "CEDIA's Benchmarking Survey provides a snapshot of theperformance data of industry companies," said CEDIA CEO UtzBaldwin. "The data gives ESCs the ability to compare themselves toindustry averages and high performance metrics, allowing them toidentify their company"s strengths and improve uponweaknesses to accomplish greater profitability. "The survey report provides detailed benchmarks, bestpractices, and trend analysis based on data collected from CEDIAmember electronic systems contractor (ESC) companies. The datarepresents company information in such categories as strategic andbusiness planning, financial performance and management,operations, and staffing and compensation.
