As reported in the Wall Street Journal this week, Mexico has retained a coveted position and been named the number one cruise ship destination in the world! In addition, there was a 7.1 per cent growth in the cruise ship industry in Mexico recently, and more than 5 million people on 1,800 ships have already arrived in the Land of the Sun via one of its many picturesque ports. These travelers already add to more than half of a billion dollars to Mexico’s economy in jobs and revenue each year, and their numbers are growing! Considering all of this, it is absolutely no wonder to learn that Carnival Cruise Lines (NYSE: CCL), a company that commands around 49 per cent of the total global cruise industry, have recommitted to Mexico. In a huge move and a true boon to both Playa del Carmen real estate and nearby Puerto Aventuras real estate, Carnival Corporation, a British and American-owned company, has just signed an agreement to invest $150 million in port infrastructure in Calica, which lies just 6 miles from Playa del Carmen and just 7 miles north of the quaint seaside community of Puerto Aventuras. The agreement was signed on the beautiful island of Cozumel by Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism, and Gerard Cahill, who is the President and CEO of Carnival Corporation, and the signing was witnessed by none other than Mexican President Felipe Calderon. According to Calderon, average tourism wages are more than 30 percent higher than the average job in Mexico’s other industries. And the tourism industry also employs more women than any other industry. President Calderón made it a point to emphasize the federal governments ambitious goal of becoming the fifth-most-visited country in the world by the year 2015. “For this reason, I congratulate Carnival and I recognize the significance of the decision that Carnival made to invest in our country,” Calderón said. The financial opportunities that are present in this small part of the world, an idyllic slice of heaven known as the Riviera Maya, are truly unprecedented.
