Two goldsmiths, Per and Winnie Enevoldsen, created Pandora jewelry in 1983. The company and eventually the brand initially started out as a small custom jewelry business in Copenhagen Denmark. The team worked the business exclusively at that time. As their retail sales grew they became more and more aware of the need to expand their market. The core business was unique in the fashion world as it revolved around the manufacture of custom handmade modular beads that could be worn as a personalized bracelet that told a unique story. The intrigue of the jewelry was that the beads were all related to the Greek myth of Pandora's box. The Greek god Zeus gave his daughter, the first woman ever created, a box. She was told by Zeus never to open it. Being insatiably curious, however, she disobeyed Zeus and opened it. Before she could react all of the bad things that Zeus put in the box and that would define the human condition flew out into the world to affect humanity. However, when Pandora took the box to her husband to show him what she had done, she discovered that there was one last thing in the box. When she opened it to show her husband what she had done it flew out and spoke to her. It identified itself as hope. This was the unique story that Per and Winnie tied to their designs and which helped launch their company into a globally recognized brand. Initially the shop in Copenhagen was small but as demand for their products grew the Enevoldsens switched their focus from local retail sales to a global market as wholesalers. In 1984 the couple hired designer Lone Frandsen to help create a new line of Pandora jewelry with which to launch their brand. They then opened a production facility in Thailand under the corporate name Pandora Productions. The brand took off and in the intervening years sales of their signature line, the beaded charm bracelets, soared. The details that set them apart from would be competitors were the quality of the workmanship and materials used in the manufacture of their jewelry. All of their pieces were made out of refined gold, silver, and platinum as well as single core glass beads, Swarovski Crystal beads and gold and silver combination beads. In addition to the quality of workmanship all bead designs were unique and quite varied. Another distinctive was that all Pandora jewelry bracelets had a patented threading system which allowed the beads to be set, added or rearranged very easily on the bracelet. They also created over eight hundred handcrafted charm beads available in a variety of materials from sterling silver, gold, murano glass to semiprecious stones such as amethyst, onyx and even pearls. Other bracelet accessories included spacers and clips to prevent the beads from falling off the bracelet when it was opened. The other marketing tactic taken by the company that increased their consumer appeal was to retire bead designs after only several years on the market making the beads collectible. As a corporation they has been very active in philanthropy by donating time and money to such worthy woman's causes as Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Institute for One World Health. They have also continued to expand their line to include other accessories such as earrings, necklaces, and Swiss made watches. In 2008 they introduced the new LovePod collection.
